學士（本科畢業）用 bachelor 這個詞，碩士學位是 master, 文科稱爲 arts, 理科則通稱爲 science。所以，文科學士爲 Bachelor of Arts（B.A.）,理科學士是 Bachelor of Science (B.S.), 文科碩士和理科碩士分別爲 Master of Arts（M.A.），Master of Science（M.S.）,
博士則無論文理科都用 Ph.D.表示。大家熟知的 MBA就是 Master of Business Administration. 即“工商管理碩士” 。

此外近來在美國又興起 MPA， Master of Public Administration, 即“公共管理碩士”
