“I eat no fish”不是“我不吃魚”，真正的意思差遠了
不知道大家平時愛不愛吃魚，如果外國人跟你說“I eat no fish”，你知道是什麼意思嗎？難道是說“我不吃魚”？其實這句話與英國女王伊麗莎白一世的一則軼聞典故有關。
eat no fish 忠實可靠的人；誠實可信的人
“eat no fish”是“eat no fish on Friday”的縮寫。天主教教徒每週五爲小齋日。小齋的規定是不準吃肉，但是不限制魚蝦。因此，在天主教中，星期五不能吃肉，就吃魚。久而久之就成了慣例，一直到今天，歐洲許多天主教地區還維持着星期五吃魚的習俗。
在英國伊麗莎白一世統治期間，出現了一個新的說法：eat no fish on Friday。伊麗莎白一世即位後帶領英國乾脆利落地又轉向了新教。按照新制定的英國國教會官方教義規定，英國國教會摒棄了天主教星期五不準吃肉的齋戒。
於是，許多老百姓爲了表明自己的立場，提出了“eat no fish on Friday”。我們偏偏就跟你們對着來，星期五就是不吃魚。“eat no fish on Friday”又縮略成“eat no fish”。隨後，“不吃魚”就成了與政府保持一致的標誌。“不吃魚的人”就成了“忠於政府的人”衍生成了“誠實可信的人”的同義詞。
那如果我們想要表達不喜歡吃魚，應該怎麼說呢？
I don't like fish (= don't like to eat fish).
我不喜歡吃魚。
除了“魚和魚肉”之外，“fish”還有很多別的意思。動詞的“fish”有“摸找，翻找，搜尋”的意思。

“fish”作爲動詞還有“拐彎抹角地引出；間接探聽”的意思。
