When I'm free 和 If I'm free, 意思居然差了十條街！
比如哪天一個外國人要你做什麼事，你回答，"I'll take care of it when I am free this afternoon."
結果到了晚上，你要是還沒有處理，外國人就會來找你了。
你可能會很委屈，“我只是說我有時間的話會處理，又沒說我一定會處理。”
而其實在外國人眼裏，這句話並不是這個意思，而是，“你會有時間，你一定會處理”。
之所以會出現這種誤會，是因爲我們對when的理解不到位。
when是必然發生（will happen）；if是可能發生（might happen）
I'll take care of it when I am free this afternoon.（今天下午我有時間，我會處理。）→一定有時間
I'll take care of it if I am free this afternoon.（如果我今天下午有時間，我就會處理。）→可能有時間，可能沒時間
天氣放晴的話，我們就去展覽會場。
（X）We may go to the fair, when the weather is bright and sunny.
（√）We may go to the fair, if the weather is bright and sunny.
人不能主宰天氣，不能決定天氣是否會晴，所以要用if強調不一定。
如果我老了，我會和我的孩子一起生活。
（X）If I am old, I'd love to live with my kids.
（√）When I am old, I'd love to live with my kids.
人老是自然規律，必然發生。
還有一個和when， if類似的詞語，是in case（萬一）。
「萬一」比「如果」的語氣更強烈，更多了一些擔心，希望它不要發生。
I need painkillers if I'm in severe pain.
如果我疼到難以忍受的話，我需要止痛藥。
I need painkillers in case I'm in severe pain.
萬一我疼到難以忍受的話，我需要止痛藥。
