Zina: What do you mean? If he was a good programmer, he should have been 1) raking it in.

吉娜： 此話怎講？若他是個好的程序設計師，他應該早就發了。

戴夫： 老闆想用認股權當作薪水付給鮑伯。可是鮑伯不想再次玩那種遊戲了。

語言詳解

A: Their business folded last week.

他們的店上星期倒了。

B: No, I can't believe it! That was my favorite bookshop.

不，我不敢相信！那是我最愛的書店。

【What do you mean?這話怎講？】

這是談話時較隨便的講法，照說應該是What do you mean by that? 另一個類似句型是What does the word mean?"這個字作何解釋？"mean 在這兩個句型的“意思、意表”解。

mean 也作“打算”解，須要注意的是後面只能接不定詞，不可接-ing式，例如:

Paul means to go to Taipei next week.

保羅打算下星期到臺北去。

A: What do you mean by saying"Judy is leaving the country."?

你說茱迪要出國是什麼意思？

B: Well, she means to accept a job offer in Singapore.

她打算要接受新加坡的一個工作機會。
