1. 表示繼續做某事，其後既可接動名詞也可接不定式，且意義相同。如：
They continued to meet [meeting] daily. 他們繼續每天都見面。
He continued to write [writing] while in hospital. 他住院時他繼續寫作。
2. 按傳統語法，表示中斷以後再繼續，其後通常只能是story, speech, journey, strike 這樣的名詞，而不能接不定式或動名詞，但現代英語已打破此規則。如：
We continued working [to work] after the break. 休息後我們繼續工作。
3. 表示繼續維持某一情況時，其後可直接跟名詞作賓語，也可先接介詞with 再接賓語。如：
We will continue (with) the payments for another year. 我們這樣的報酬還要維持1年。
4. 由於可用於及物或不及物動詞，所以有時用主動語態和被動語態意思差不多。如：
