1. 用作連詞(=but not)，意爲“而不”“不是……(而是)”“與其……(不如)”，前後連接的成分應該是平行的。
如：
He ran rather than walked. 他不是在走而是在跑。
He is a writer rather than a teacher. 與其說他是教師還不如說他是作家。
You are doing this for yourself rather than for others. 你做這件事不是爲別人而是爲你自己。
It was what he meant rather than what he said. 這是他的意思，而不是他說的話。
2. 由於既可視爲連詞也可視爲介詞，所以連接不定式時，後面一個不定式可帶to或不帶to(視爲準並列連詞時)，也可用動名詞(視爲介詞時)。
如：
