這是一首感舊懷人的名篇，本詞爲懷念歌女小蘋所作。上片寫別後的孤獨和刻骨相思，寫今日，下片追憶初見小萍時的印象及小蘋歸去時的情景，寫去時的情景，寫去年。據作者《小山詞》自跋所述，作者好友沈廉叔、陳君友家有蓮、鴻、蘋、雲四個歌女，詞人及其好友的新詞經常由她們在席間歌唱。作者和詞中小蘋亦曾有過一段戀情，後沈歿陳病，小蘋等人也就風飄雲散，不知去向。
