香港中秋舞火龍的起源還有過一段傳說：很早以前，大坑區在一次風災襲擊後，出現了一條蟒蛇，四處作惡，村民們四出搜捕，終於把它擊斃。不料次日蟒蛇不翼而飛。數天後，大坑便發生瘟疫。這時，村中父老忽獲菩薩託夢，說是隻要在中秋佳節舞動火龍，便可將瘟疫驅除。事有巧合，此舉竟然奏效。從此，舞火龍就流傳至今。
不管這傳說有多少迷信成份，但中國是龍的故土，在香港大坑中秋節舞火龍已有一百多年的歷史，這是值得珍視的。如今大坑區的舞火龍活動規模頗大，除總教練、教練、總指揮及指揮外，安全組等等。輪番舞龍者達三萬多人。
