Most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve this goal. What is the secret to popularity? In fact, it is very simple. The first step is to improve our appearance. We should always make sure that we stay in good shape and dress well. When we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look better but also feel better. In addition, we should smile and appear friendly. After all, our facial expression is an important part of our appearance. If we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and impressed by our confidence. Another important step is developing more consideration for others. We should always put others first and place their interests before our own. It's also important to be good listeners; in this way people will feel comfortable enough to confide in us. However, no matter what we do, we must not gossip. Above all, we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies. Only by being sincere and respectful of others can we earn their respect. If we can do all of the above, I am sure popularity will come our way.

Leo Tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.

He is right. We always have great plans and dreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind example; we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep the environment clean. Yet we still litter on the ground. We complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but

it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. We are so concerned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the government to set laws to protect them. But, do we, as adults, set a good example for our kids? We use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, I dare to say, we harm more!

In my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had better change ourselves first. As ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. But we can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment around us, we must act as good models for our kids.

If each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of individuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world!

So please, the next time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more importantly…our planet!

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I want to tell you a story about one of my friends, a lovely and smart girl who is always ready to help others. Being our grade leader, she is good at both work and study. In many people's opinion, she is excellent and perfect. But one day she told me she was gloomy and insecure. People around her considered her outstanding and flawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the more she thought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She found that she was far from perfection. Last week, she didn‘t do well in her French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for a conference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she failed to be a perfect girl without any mistakes.

I was surprised to hear that for I thought she had every reason to be confident. However, the expectation of perfection has become a burden to her. I told her no one could be perfect and I suggested she find her own position.

In fact, people are so eager to be perfect that they demand too much of themselves. They want to be special and unique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, we can never avoid mistakes and errors. It‘s impossible for us to be a superman or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, there are always some flaws. If we hold that everything should be perfect, we would be overcritical.

My friend now has changed her attitude. She accepts her shortcomings but still keeps a positive outlook. She is even more active and doesn‘t allow the mistakes to hinder her pursuit of excellence. And I think that‘s the way we should be!That‘s all. Thank you!

―If I could reach higher, just for one moment to touch the sky…---this is from my favorite song Reach.

When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.

Whenever I think of Gloria, I can‘t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair. ―Am I destined to take the back seat to others? Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.

Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and dedication. Once you have a dream, don‘t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

Honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon! Today I would like to talk about the importance of keeping optimistic. When we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you will have no courage even to face them, how can you conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, ―An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.

Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there‘s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success. Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.

A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end

my speech with the great British poet Shelley‘s lines: ―If winter comes, can spring be far behind? Thank you!

The title of my speech is ―What college education means to reflecting on the past two and half years of my college experience, I come to realize how much it has shaped me.

For me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up. With great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. By dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature at night, I‘ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.

Besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. How can I best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? My one year‘s experience as a part-time English teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, I have to possess some actual strength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation. Amid the hectic schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, I feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that I ‘m on the right way.

And more importantly, college education has set up not only single ships, but also fleets with common destinations. By interacting with friends of common beliefs, I‘ve acquired skills of relating to other people.

Now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,I‘m still not in the position to tell what‘s waiting ahead of me ,but with a powerful propeller, a precise compass and ardent companions of sailing in the sea of society, I‘m ready to be a great sea-explorer.

Thank you.

I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it ared to what others have been through I‘m fortunate.

Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself ―I can handle it when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.

, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.

So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you‘re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you‘re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no. I couldn‘t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. ―Look, he said, ―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

Thank you.

As two men were about to be sent into prison, the warden let each of them make a demand. The American loved smoking, so he wanted three boxes of cigars; while the Jew said all he needed was a telephone to contact with people outside of the prison. Two years later, the first out was the American who still had many cigars in his hands and pockets but was crying: ―Give me some matches! Then the Jew walked out, he shook hands with the warden and said: ―Thank you for the phone, it made my business increase by 200%.

What do you think of this story? Life today is what you‘ve decided years ago, and so is the future: your decisions today will affect your destiny years later. Now I have two things to choose from: to go abroad, to find myself a decent job after graduation or to further my study as a postgraduate. I haven‘t worked out an answer to this question yet, but I know that whatever I do will directly affect my future.

An Indian once said life is just like a game of cards, the cards in your hand represent opportunities, while the way you play decides the result you‘ll get. Looking back in history, during World War Ⅱ, Churchill who led the British people resolved to expect ―blood, toil, tears and sweat. They won the

victory then. Today Shenzhou 5 took the first Chinese astronaut into space. I am sure that later there‘ll be more spacecrafts, like Shenzhou 6,7 and 8 ……

So what does the future look like? No one can tell. But I know the choice is yours, the future is now. Make good use of everyday, a man can achieve greater successes, a country can gain prosperity and the whole world can be united, as it has never been before.

In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat for supper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. At certain times in our lives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school to attend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife. Yes, life is a matter of choice. Seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. But in essence, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived, savored, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease--SARS. Yet, even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remained optimistic. Instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean "SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING." I was deeply touche

d by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we're still in a battle. people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.

laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economic advancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought on them. But, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstrating their values.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to live optimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day. As for me, I choose to be cheerful.

Let me begin my speech with a replay of scenes familiar to most, if not all, of those present here today.

"Mum, I'm sorry, but I need 3,000 yuan for my tuition this year."

"Mum, it is my friend's birthday tomorrow, I must buy her a present."

"Mum, this jacket was out of fashion long ago, would you do me a favor? "

Take. Take. Take. The relationship between a mother and a child always seems to follow such a pattern. I know my mother is always there for me, providing me with everything I need; from food to clothing, from tuition to pocket money. I never thought twice about all she did until one day she said, "Will there be a time that you'll say you have taken enough from me? "

Like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, have been continually demanding what we desire from nature. We enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. We take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources. We appreciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. Our ruthless exploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth. As we tragically learned from last summer's floods. we cannot continue our carelessness.

Finally, standing here at the threshold of the 21st century, we cannot help thinking of our posterity. Nature is not only the mother of the present generation, but also the mother of the generations to come. How severely our descendents will criticize us if we leave them a barren and lifeless mother? How much more they will appreciate us if we give them a world of harmony to inherit? Let us start respecting and caring for nature from now on. Let us start the campaign of creating a mutually beneficial relationship between people and nature right from this moment. With this new start, I firmly believe, that our children, and our children's children will live in a brand new age of green trees, clean air, crystal water, blue sky and an even more promising world!

We Are a Normal Member of the Big Family of Nature Once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince..." Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.

And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they live happily every after." Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.

The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life

he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.

If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.

I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success for me. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.

Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

Thank you.
