October 5, 2002

Dear Mike,

Your letter and package reached me yesterday. You really give me a great surprise. I was wondering what was in such a nice package until I carefully opened it and found that you sent me an attractive present for my birthday. Thank you very much for your kindness, and I like the present, which will give me pleasure for a long time to come.

Again it is thoughtful of you to send me the present on my birthday. Yesterday evening my colleagues held a birthday party for me, including John Liu---I think you can remember---a nice tall boy, who invited you and I to his birthday last October. We enjoyed ourselves, and all of us mentioned your stay with us. We hope that you will come to China soon, if possible.

Please accept my sincere thanks and best wishes.

Yours,

Peter Wang

Dear Mr. Blake,

Thank you for informing us your new house address. It is fantastic that you have at last a house of your own, which, as explained, is located in a sea site city. I can imaginer that you are now enjoying your life and work, and you can entertain yourselves in such a big house.

When I told the news to Peter Li, James Wang and Nancy Zhang, the girl who always wears a long hair, and went to Beijing with us last year, they all wish you to send us some pictures of your new house. We hope that when we go on errand in America next year, we can pay a visit to your family. Then we are sure to have a nice gathering.

This morning, Peter and I went to an art gallery to pick up an oil painting with a beauty spot of China’s southern part as a token of our hearty congratulations. We hope it can add up to your decorations wherever you like, and we also wish you will like it.

Yours sincerely,

William Fang

Dear David,

I'm glad you'll come to Beijing to learn Chinese. Chinese is very useful, and many foreigners are learning it now. It's difficult for you because it's quite different from English. You have to remember as many Chinese words as possible. It's also important to do some reading and writing. You can watch TV and listen to the radio to practise your listening. Do your best to talk with people in Chinese. You can learn Chinese not only from books but also from people around you. If you have any questions, please ask me. I'm sure you'll learn Chinese well.

Hope to see you soon in Beijing.

Yours,

Wang Ming

Dear Prof. Li,

I, the undersigned, am a senior in the Computer Science Department of Tsinghua University. I am applying for an MS degree under your guidance so that I write to you today for a further contact. The reason for my application for the major — utilization of computer in farming — can be illustrated as follows. I belong to farmers. I am from the West. I was born and brought up in the countryside so that I intend to learn what can be used in the countryside.

After graduation, I want to make use of what I learn in university to make contribution to the development of my hometown, which is still one of the ten counties in poverty.

Best wishes to you!

Sincerely Yours

In the east of China, there is a small city---Haimen. I was born there.Today, I am telling you about my hometown. Haimen is not far from Shanghai. It’sat the mouth of the Changjiang River. Haimen is a modern city. There are lots ofhigh buildings in it. Most of us live in flats. We like to live in flats becausewe can be close to our friends. In the center of Haimen, there are many shops. You can buy some nice things here. Things in most shops aren’t expensive. Youcan pay a little money and they are yours. My hometown is a beautiful city. Oneach of the roads, there are some big trees and nice flowers. The roads are alsovery clean. They make people happy and comfortable. The seasons here are verynice. I like autumn best. It’s neither hot nor cold. A poem says “Flyer ofsummer come to my window to sing, then fly away. And yellow leaves of autumn, which have no songs, just fall there with a sign.” It’s very cool.I love Haimen. It’s a nice place to live. Welcome to my hometown.

The lucky-number has become increasingly popular in daily life of modernsociality. For example, the number eight means big money which people like most, while the number four means death.

Some people believe lucky numbers so deeply that they will afford atelephone with numbers without four and others which is bad in their mind. Theyargue that the lucky-number really can bring good luck, and, at least, noevidence testifies they can not.

As far as I am concerned, there is no such relationship between the numbersand lucky, for the reason that numbers their self are given certain meaning forthe purpose of application of mathematic. And, in addition, man should notdepend on lucky which, in their mind, the numbers gives them.
