英語單詞client來自拉丁語clientem（追隨者、家臣），而clientem源自cluere（傾聽、服從、跟隨）。
Client表示“客户”時，同近義詞有customer。而client通常是指律師、醫生、諮詢顧問等專業人士的客户，這些客户通常會尊重並聽從專業人士的建議，因此client還可譯為“委託人”。而customer一般譯為“消費者”。
