R:Fine. Everything is going smoothly.

D:This is Miss Harriet Smith, finance manager of A & P Corporation.

This is Mr. Roy Stanford.

H:How do you do?

R:How do you do? I work in the international trade and banking division.

As you know, we're very much involved with many large American corporations dealing with international trade.

H:Yeah. That's why I come here this afternoon.

R:What we're doing is actively and hopefully developing a relationship with large companies including their subsidiaries or branches to ensure that we can provide all services they need.

H:Would you please be more specific?

R:Sure. We handle all types of letters of credit, and also advise if they should be irrevocable,

whether they should be confirmed, whether we would recommend them in certain circumstances.

And of course, we deal with documentary collections and so on.

H:So your division is to ensure that its customers receive payment for the goods they expect.

R:That's where we can help an exporter like your corporate.

You see, it can happen any time that an exporter has to wait two or even three years before they are able to obtain their money after they ship goods to a buyer abroad.

It could be of any reason. That's why we always hear people say that exporting is easy;

it's getting paid that's the hard part.

H:I'm afraid it's the case we sometimes have to confront.

R:But of course, we're not all the time selling a service.

A lot of the time we give advice and solve problems to our customers.

H:What's a typical problem that you would expect a customer to come to you about?

R:For example, just recently we had one with a contract that was signed to supply some machinery to a company in France.

H:What happened? And what role did you play?

R:The contract was originally drawn in USD, but the French company was not permitted to cover forward for any length of time.

They would have to buy the necessary USD to pay the bill.

H:I see.

R:So we bought currency for the customer and our customer could then work out his price in French francs instead of US dollars.

H:Fine. OK, I think we've covered everything now, haven't we?

R:Yes, I think so. It was good of you to see me.

H:My pleasure. Thank you for answering me so many questions.

I'm sure we'll buy your service in the near future.

R:Thank you.

W:Liu Bing, I have two thousand yuan for the cost of this term,

enough to last from now until summer vacation.

I feel anxious about carrying around such a large sum. What should I do?

[00:34.95]L:Let me think. You can deposit one half as regular savings accounts and another half as time deposits.

W:That's a good idea. Will they earn a similar rate?

L:The interest rate for time deposits is much higher than regular savings account.

W:How long do I have to keep the money in the account?

L:The savings banks offer a choice of three, six or twelve - month maturities in most cases.

They also offer Time Certificate of Deposit in two-, three-, five or ten- year terms.

W:For us only the short-time deposits are available. Does the rate go up depending on how long you keep the certificate?

L:Yes, of course. It would seem that three month time deposits are the best option for you.

W:I agree with you. Tomorrow, let's go to the bank to deposit my money.

L:Yes, I want to deposit mine, too.

W:What maturities are the most popular?

L:Most people use the six or twelve-months plans, of course,

they may renew the certificate on maturity if they wish.

W:What if the customer needs the money for an emergency before the certificate matures? Can he get it out?

L:Yes, of course, he can withdraw his money by cashing in his certificate before the maturity date if necessary.

W:What will happen?

L:He just won't receive the stated interest return.

W:What a loss!

L:So if you want to have a high rate of return, don't withdraw your cash before the end of the certificated period.

W:Good idea.

Z:Good afternoon!

A:Good afternoon!

Z:Today I'll introduce something about the history of banking in the west.

Well, that's very interesting, the earliest banks started in Babylon almost 4 000 years ago.

They were really temples which collected deposits and made loans.

S1:I see, but I had always thought that banking started during the Renaissance in Europe.

N:No, it was much earlier than that. Then, there were banks in ancient Greece and Rome, too.

It wasn't until the breakup of the Roman Empire and the decline in trade and commercial transactions that banking lost its previous importance.

S2:What about the laws against usury during the Middle Ages?

Didn't such laws make it illegal to charge interest on loans?

Z:Yes, they did, but these laws were gradually changed during the 14th and 15th centuries and banking functions started appearing again in Italy and Belgium and later in France,

Germany and England.

S3:So we can really say that banking restarted during the Renaissance.

Z:You are right. We can easily see the need for the development of the banks during that period.

Commercial and financial transactions had once again started to become more complex as Europe emerged from the feudal system of the Middle Ages.

S4:Could you tell us more in detail?

Z:Yeah. For one thing, many banks started that way, especially in France and England,

but they gradually expanded their activities to handling deposits and loans,

issuing and trading bills of exchange and even issuing their own notes;

for another thing, they started the fractional reserve system which is the central feature of modern banks.

S5:When did the idea of central banks get started?

Z:Well, the first bank that was partially owned and controlled by a state government was established in Venice in 1587.

Then, the bank of England appeared. We could call them semi-public.

As a matter of fact, the central banks with specific regulatory functions were created in the middle of 19th century. OK, we call it a day.

A:Good-bye!

A:Now let's talk about paper money.

B:Yes, paper money can be folded into a wallet. Every country produces its own.

A:Another term for paper money is 'note' or 'banknote', we say a five-yuan note,

a twenty-cent note. In American English, 'bill' is another term.

In American slang you may hear 'a hundred dollar bill' or 'a buck' as 'ten bucks' or 'greenback' or 'long green(folding green)' or 'folding money'.

B:How complex it is!

the assistant will give you change. We always say a dollar note (banknote),

B:Does your family have many money?

A:The word 'money' is uncountable, so you'd say 'much money'. My family is the same as yours,

We are living on salaries, our deposits in the bank are limited.

B:Is the word money used in other ways?

B:money

A:Yes,in many conditions we still use money to show things,

B:Anything else?

A:When foreigners come to China, the first thing they do is to go to the bank to change American dollars into Chinese money.

When we have money left from monthly expenses, we'd better put some in a savings bank.

The problem is many businesses are mostly 'money matters'. So time is money and money is life.

Do you know the proverb about money?

B:Of course. I know another one:'Money makes the mare go.' Or we say 'Money talks'.

A:Yes, good. You understand well. You know 'make money' and 'lose money' in business, don't you?

B:Can we use money in its plural form?

A:Yes, but it's not the same word, it's spelled monies or moneys.

It means an amount of money, for example, public monies and tax monies.

Anyway, there are many other places for us to use the word 'money'. Let's work on mastering them.

B:(Teacher) Madam, you have just said that our future work deals with numbers, but what concrete work do you mean?

C:Madam, please explain this.

A:All right. This is a good question. There are, in general, four processes in accounting:

addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The most frequently used is addition.

Every day we have many current accounts, and every account withdraws money or makes some deposits.

B:When do we use subtraction for current accounts?

A:Very simple. When an amount of money is withdrawn, you must subtract this number from the general deposit,

then write the new amount of deposit in the account book.

C:How do we use English to say this?

A:The formulas for addition:7+9=16, 239+145=384. We say 'seven and nine is (or are) sixteen',

第一個算式我們這樣說:seven and nine is (或用are)sixteen,

but in the latter three-digit number, we should use 'plus' instead of 'and',

we say 'two hundred and thirty-nine plus one (a) hundred and forty-five is (or equals) three hundred and eighty-four.'

我們得這樣說:two hundred and thirty-nine plus one (或用a)hundred and forty-five is leaves(或用equals)three hundred and eighty-four。

B:How about subtraction?

A:Look at these two formulas:8-5=3, 543-216=327. In the first formula,

we say 'five from eight leaves (or is) three', or 'eight minus five is three'.

我們說:five from eight leaves(或用is )three ,另一種說法是:eight miuns five is three。

In the latter threedigit number we should use 'minus':

five hundred and forty-three minus two hundred and sixteen equals three hundred and twenty-seven.

我們就得這樣說:five hundred and forty-three minus two hundred and sixteen equals three hundred and twenty-seven。

C:When do we use multiplication and division?

A:Multiplication and division are used to calculate interest rates.

Every savings deposit compounds the amount of interest.

We should use 'times' or 'multiply' to express this. For the simple formula:4*6=24,

we can say four sixes are twenty-four, but for the larger numbers, such as 18*243=4374

we say eighteen times two hundred and fortythree makes (or is) four thousand three hundred and seventy-four,

我們就得說:eighteen times two hundred and forty-three makes(或用is)four thousand three hundred and seven-four,

but more formally:18 multiplied by 243 equals 4374.

B:Is division used in accounting?

A:Well, in big firms, companies, enterprises, joint ventures and others,

sometimes the amount of investments are large,

and everyday current accounts are very complex, so all those processes have to be used.

C:Can you give us some examples on division?

A:A simple one is 9/3=3, we say three into nine goes three;

A:如簡單的算題9/3=3,我們說:three into nine goes three:

296/8=37, we say two hundred and ninety-six divided by eight equals thirty-seven.

在大多數除法算式中如296/8=37,我們得說two hundred and ninety-six divided by eight equals thirty-seven。

B,C:Thanks a lot, Madam!

We're thinking of opening another two in Tianjin and Suzhou next year.

V:That's terrific. I'm from Suzhou, which is developing rapidly.

E:Really? I hope we will discuss the financial situation in Suzhou sometime later on.

V:I'd like to if I can be of any help.

E:Now, let's begin with income of our bank last year.

V:Your total group income in 1994 amounted to one hundred and fifty-five million US dollars compared with one hundred and thirty-five million US dollars for fiscal 1993.

That's an increase of...

E:Of nearly fifteen per cent over the year before last,

a rate of increase slightly above that of recent years.

V:Your net interest earning at the end of 1994 reached ninetynine million dollars.

E:That's exact good news for us. In the financial year 1994,

interest received amounted to six hundred and fifteen million dollars and interest paid to five hundred and sixteen million.

V:So, that's almost ten per cent up over the 1993 figure.

E:Yes, the net interest income is pretty satisfactory indeed,

in what is, as you know, an intensely competitive market.

V:Oh, you also achieved a significant increase in non-interest income.

E:Yes, our non-interest income increases from forty-six million in 1993 to fifty-six million dollars at the end of the fiscal year 1994.

You know, a part of the bank's policy is to limit dependence on net interest as a source of income and to develop its fee and commission earning activities.

So 1994 income in this area accounted for a two per cent higher contribution to total income than was the case in 1993.

V:Yes, this is really an encouraging trend since the economic environment in general is changing.

It also shows your response to the sensitivity of interest rates in particular.

E:Due to non-interest income of fifty-six million dollars,

our total group income in 1994 was twenty million dollars higher than the pervious financial year.

V:Why is the increase as large as eighteen per cent?

V:In addition, is there any sharp increase in other costs?

E:No. On the contrary, other expenses increased by only a little under seventeen per cent.

That's the smallest annual increase since 1989.

Personally, I think it illustrates our determination to bring costs under control.

V:What's your yearly profit after paying dividends to shareholders?

E:After allocation of the dividends, there remained a net undistributed balance for the year of nine million dollars.

The total amount was transferred to reserves to cover unexpected events.

V:So as your annual report indicates, all this adds up to total group outgoings of one hundred and fifty-five million dollars.

E:Yes,the figure of total group outgoings exactly balances out with the total income.

V:Now, we have a clearer picture of the source of income and the application of income for your bank in 1994 compared with 1993.
