The name of our galaxy, the Milky Way, comes from its appearance. It’s a milky white band of glowing light that spreads across the night sky. If you look up at the evening sky, there’s a good chance you will not be able to see what your grandmother saw when she was a little girl. A new study says that nearly 80 percent of people in North America can’t see the Milky Way because of light pollution.

The most light-polluted country in the world is Singapore where researchers found that people living in the country never have the chance to experience true darkness. Other countries with large percentages of people living under such skies include Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Too much light has a direct effect on human physiology and behavior. It can also destroy our sleep cycle. What’s more, it also affects wildlife. For example, baby turtles may not swim into the ocean because of street lights near shorelines

In the U.S., some communities have been taking action on light pollution but in developing countries, people still want to make bigger, brighter light, like LED lights. They can save energy, but on the other hand they will increase light pollution rapidly in fact.

There are still people that can remember when they used to be able to see the Milky Way, when they would walk outside at night, but those are becoming fewer and fewer.

Nighttime natural scenery needs protection just like daytime scenery. Don’t let the Light pollution rob us of the chance to experience the wonder of a natural night sky.

34. Why do we call galaxy the Milky Way?

Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel “Alice in Wonderland” in detail.

The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.

The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice runs after him, and that is where her adventures begin.

In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.

Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.

To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a situation which makes people feel puzzled. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distractions(分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.

Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares(野兔)have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating(交配)season. Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of the two, mad as a Hatter is more common.

Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman who is called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.

42. Which of the following situations best fits the expression “to fall down a rabbit hole”?

A. When Jack was sitting in the study, he got bored with the homework and felt sleepy.

B. When Sue turned On the TV, she chose to watch her favourite programme as usual.

C. When Jim was looking for a sport book online, he lost himself in reports on superstars.

D. When Lily was thinking about how to solve a math problem, she came up with a good idea.

43. According to the passage, the expression “to be mad as a March Hare” .

A. describes how hares behave in March

B. shows hares’ characteristics in a funny way

C. is used more often than the expression mad as a Hatter

D. has the same meaning as the expression mad as a Hatter

44. Which of the following characters wants others to obey his or her orders in every situation?

A. Alice. B. The March Hare. C. The Hatter. D. The Queen of Hearts.

45. The writer mainly wants to ________in this passage.

A. introduce a famous novel and its language style

B. introduce a famous writer Lewis Carroll and his novels

C. explain some English expressions from a famous novel

Communication is important for strong family relationships. However, if you don’t truly listen to others, it can be difficult to communicate. Working on your listening skills can help you communicate better and form stronger bonds.

Stay in the present

When listening to a family member, do not think about anything else. Put your phone away and give the speaker your full attention. It’s important to try to stay in the present to make your family member feel heard and valued.

Pay attention to what is being said. Make understanding the speaker’s thoughts the most important thing at the moment.

Use body language

If you want the family member to feel valued, make sure to show that you are listening. You can do it by using body language. Nod as the speaker talks. Smile when it is suitable. Keep eye contact.

Do not cut in

Cutting in can prevent you from communicating effectively. No matter how excited you feel about a subject, do not start talking until the family member has finished. Always allow a few seconds of silence after the speaker finishes talking before offering your reply. This allows you to make sure the speaker has finished, and gives the speaker a chance to fully express himself.

Ask questions

Part of listening is understanding. If there is anything in the conversation you don’t understand, please ask after the family member finishes. This shows you are truly listening to him and value his thoughts.

Ask questions that encourage open discussions. For example, “What do you think of the situation?” Don’t ask “why” questions, which might make the speaker feel uncomfortable.

Follow these tips, listen actively to your family to help communication run smoothly and build strong family relationships.

Guilty (羞愧的)of texting too much

Kids are really obsessed with texting. When I text my friends, almost all of them answer back in less than a minute. Some of my friends even get their phones taken away for being on them too much. I see my friends most of my day at soccer or at school, and even I am guilty of texting them several hours a day when I am home. Sometimes it’s better to spend time outdoors and with your family rather than with your phone.

—Tom

Get physical-Get off the phone!

A lot of my friends, as soon as they got a smart phone, were texting or online constantly. Spending that much time on a screen is not healthy for you or your brain. Other high-tech timesavers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or email to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. The classroom seemed empty when I entered it that morning. Suddenly my classmates stood up from below the desks almost at the same time, and they sang a happy birthday song to me together. “Happy Birthday to you!” and best wishes from my classmates and teachers appeared on the screen. What a big surprise! I was moved to tears. That moment was fixed in my mind forever.
