A. How Do you Do?
Li Hong is a receptionist. She works at a guest houseof a technical school. Lizzy is an overseas is from South Africa. Li Hong now meets her atthe airport.
Li: Hi, you must be Lizzy. I'm Li Hong from thetechnical school.
Lizzy: Oh, how do you do, Li Hong? Thank you for coming to meet me.
Li: How do you do, Lizzy? Welcome to China. Did you have a good journey?
Lizzy: Yeah, quite good. But I am a little tired. It's a long journey, you know.
Li: Yes, let's go back to the guest house of our school. Everything is ready for you there.
Lizzy: That's very kind of you.
Li: You are welcome.
B. At the Canteen
Li Ying is a new employee at a joint venture. Mr. Smith is the chief engineer there. Theymeet for the first time at the canteen.
Li Ying: Hello. Are you Mr. Smith?
Mr. Smith: Oh, yes. Simon Smith.
Li Ying: How do you do, Mr. Smith?
Mr. Smith: How do you do? Are you a new comer?
Li Ying: Yes. My name is Li Ying. I know we have a chief engineer from England. I'm glad tomeet you here.
Mr. Smith: I'm glad to meet you, too. There are so many good things to eat in the canteen.
Li Ying: Yeah, they are delicious.
Mr. Smith: Let's have our lunch at this table.

Actually I was born in England and then my family moved tothe States when I was a little girl. You can see that I have brown curly hair and blue eyes. I'm170 cm tall and perhaps a little bit overweight. I like Chinese culture so much that my hobbiesare Chinese painting and Beijing Opera. I enjoy Chinese food and I'm also quite skilled in usingchopsticks. I would like to be your friend not only in class, but also after class. Oh, my name isHelen Waters. Please call me Helen. Now, do you have any more questions about me?
成人英語口語聽力：No Time for FormalityNo Time for Formality
American people are always in a hurry. It seems they don't have time for formality. SoAmerican informality is well known. But you may still feel somewhat surprised at this "lack ofrespect." This is especially true in the business world. Most Americans have little concern for"rank" or "title". They often use first names upon meeting people for the first time. They mayintroduce their friend to you in this way: "Li Hong, this is Mary Smith." In this situation, you arefree to call the lady "Mary" or "Miss Smith". American people do not always shake hands uponmeeting strangers. They often just smile and say "Hi" or "Hello". To American people, such aninformal greeting really means the same thing as a formal handshaking. Similarly, Americanpeople do not have a formal "farewell". They will just wave "good-bye" to the whole group. Orperhaps, they will simply say "Bye" or "So long" and then leave. There are no handshakes inmost cases. To Americans, a friendly, informal relationship is the most important thing.
