大多數人都很喜歡吃水果。水果顏色鮮豔，形狀多樣，看起來也怪可愛的。一些和水果有關的美國成語和俗語也都具有肯定的含義。但是，這倒也並不是千篇一律，也有一些由水果組成的習慣用語表達的是反面的意思。
我們首先要給大家介紹的一個俗語是：lemon。Lemon就是檸檬。檸檬是非常酸的一種水果，大概沒有其它東西比它更酸的了。但是，lemon 作爲一個俗語它的意思就成了那種質量很壞的東西，不能起它應有的作用。美國人經常把一輛經常出問題的汽車稱爲lemon。下面就是一個例子：
例句-1: Mr. Lee paid $15,000 for his new car. But he got a real lemon: it's never run right and it spends more time in the garage getting fixed than it does on the road.
這個人說：“李先生花了一萬五千塊美金買了這輛新車。可是，這輛車卻是毛病百出。這車從來也沒有好好地跑過，它在車行裏修的時間比它在馬路上跑的時間還多。”
Lemon 這個俗語也不侷限於壞的汽車，它還可以指其它那些不理想的東西，下面這個人的經驗就是一例：

人們坐在一起閒聊，天南地北，說長道短的，傳播流言蜚語，這是很普遍的一種活動。美國有好多成語和俗語是形容這一方面的。例如to shoot the breeze。
To shoot就是發射、開槍、發炮等，breeze就是陣陣微風。To shoot the breeze這個習慣用語使人腦子裏出現了一幅畫面，也就是：一些好朋友沒事聚在一起閒聊天，毫無顧忌地想說什麼就說什麼。下面我們來聽聽一個大學生說他昨晚在幹什麼：
例句-1: On Friday nights I usually go to a movie. But it was raining so hard last night I just stayed in the dorm to sit around and shoot the breeze with a couple of friends.

早在一百多年前，當美國南北戰爭正在進行的時刻，士兵們把那些非官方渠道來的消息，也就是祕密地在他們中間傳播的消息稱爲grapevine。下面這個例子就是一個士兵正在把一個消息告訴他的要好朋友：
