Parapan Am athlete helps young Toronto amputees learn to run

Rudy Garcia-Tolson, a gold-medal Paralympian who lost both legs when he was 6, teams up with Toronto mobility clinic teaching youngsters how to use prosthetics.

Luolin Webster loves running. As she tears her way up the field, arms churning and a big smile on her face, her rainbow-covered prosthesis becomes a multicoloured blur.

Luolin Webster

Born without a fibula in her left leg, Luolin uses three different prostheses, one for swimming, running and everyday use.

The 9-year-old was one of the participants at a running and mobility clinic held this weekend by orthopedics company Ossur and the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

While Parapan Am athletes competed only a few kilometres away, some of Toronto’s newest amputees were learning to run — many for the first time.

Some left wheelchairs and walkers behind to participate in the clinic, which provided amputees with an opportunity to learn how to properly run with their new limbs and to try out athletic prostheses.

“A lot of these amputees are fresh and new and they don’t necessarily know how to use their leg or legs,” said Paralympic athlete Rudy Garcia-Tolson, who was on hand to help with the training. “Being out here is the first step.”

Garcia-Tolson, who was born with multiple birth defects, had both legs amputated when he was 6 years old.

He said losing his legs set him free.

“They cut my chains off because I was able to go out and be who I was,” he said.

Garcia-Tolson has competed in numerous Paralympic Games, and won the gold medal in the 200-metre individual medley in 2004 and 2008.

On Monday, he’s competing for the United States Parapan Am team in long jump.

Garcia-Tolson said competing at the international level is all about providing amputees with role models and inspiration.
