小學三年級英語故事:The country maid and her milk

A country maid was walking along with a can of milk upon her head, when she fell into the following train of reflections.

"The money for which I shall sell this milk will enable me to increase my stock of eggs to three hundred. These eggs, allowing for what may prove addle(腐壞的,糊塗的) , and what may be destroyed by vermin(害蟲,歹徒) , will produce at least two hundred and fifty chickens. The chickens will be fit to carry to market just at the time when poultry(家禽) is always dear; so that by the new year I cannot fail of having money enough to purchase a new gown(長袍,禮服) . Green-let me consider-yes, green becomes my complexion best, and green it shall be. In this dress I will go to the fair, where all young fellows will strive to have me for a parter; but no-I shall refuse every one of them, and with a disdainful(輕蔑的,鄙視的) toss turn from them."

Transported with this idea, she could not forbear(忍耐克制) acting with her head the thought that passed in her mind, when down came the can of milk! And all her imaginary happiness vanished in a moment.

  小學三年級英語故事:井底之蛙

Have you not heard of the frog that lived in a shallow well? It said to a turtle(海龜) that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go out, I jump about on the railing(欄杆,扶手) beside the mouth of the well. When I come home, I rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the water, it comes up to my armpits(腋窩) and holds up my cheeks. If I walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. I look around at the wriggly(蠕動地,迴避地) worms, crabs and tadpoles(蝌蚪) , and none of them can compare with me. Moreover, I am lord of thistrough(水槽) of water and I stand up tall in this shallow well. My happiness is full. My dear sir, why don't you come often and look around my place?"

Before the turtle from the East Sea could get its left foot in the well, its right knee got stuck. Ithesitated(躊躇,猶豫) and retreated. The turtle told the frog about the East Sea.

"Even a distance of a thousand li cannot give you an idea of the sea's width; even a height of a thousand ren cannot give you an idea of its depth. In the time of King Yu of the Xia dynasty, there were floods nine years out of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase. ln the time of King Tang of the Shang dynasty there were droughts(乾旱) seven years out of eight, but the waters in the sea did not decrease. The sea does not change along with the passage of time and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount of rain that falls. The greatest happiness is to live in the East Sea."

After listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease(不安的,拘束的) .

  小學三年級英語故事:Give it a second thought

An American Indian tells about a brave who found an eagle's egg and put it into the nest of aprairie chicken草原雞. The eaglet小鷹 hatched with the brood一夥,一窩 of chicks and grew up with them.

All its life, the changeling低能的 eagle, thinking it was a prairie chicken, did what the prairie chickens did. It scratched in the dirt for seeds and insects to eat. It clucked咯咯叫 and cackled咯咯叫,喋喋不休. And it flew in a brief thrashing of wings and flurry慌張,疾風 of feathers no more than a few feet off the ground. After all, that's how prairie chickens were supposed to fly.

Years passed. And the changeling eagle grew very old. One day, it saw a magnificent壯麗的,宏偉的 bird far above in the cloudless sky. Hanging with graceful majesty威嚴,雄偉 on the powerful wind currents, it soared with scarcely a beat of its strong golden wings.

"What a beautiful bird!" said the changeling eagle to its neighbor. "What is it?"

"That's an eagle - the chief of the birds," the neighbor clucked. "But don't give it a second thought. You could never be like him."

So the changeling eagle never gave it a second thought and it died thinking it was a prairie chicken.

A man was lost while driving through the country. As he tried to read a map, he accidentally drove off the road into a ditch溝渠. Though he wasn't injured, his car was stuck deep in the mud泥. So the man walked to a nearby farm to ask for help.

"Warwick can get you out of that ditch," said the farmer, pointing to an old mule騾 standingin a field. The man looked at the haggardly憔悴地 mule and looked at the farmer who just stood there repeating, "Yep, old Warwick can do the job." The man figured he had nothing to lose. The two men and Warwick made their way back to the ditch.

The farmer hitched鉤,套 the mule to the car. With a snap of the reins腎臟,腰部 he shouted, "Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!" And the mule pulled the car from the ditch with very little effort.

The man was amazed. He thanked the farmer, patted輕拍 the mule and asked, "Why did you call out all of those other names before you called Warwick?"

The farmer grinned露齒而笑 and said, "Old Warwick is just about blind. As long as he believes he's part of a team, he doesn't mind pulling."
