國家衛健委新聞發言人米鋒在4月17日召開的新聞發佈會上表示，根據武漢市的訂正（revision）結果：截至4月16日24時，各省（區、市）和新疆生產建設兵團累計死亡病例（the total number of deaths from COVID-19）4632例，累計報告確診病例82692例。
武漢市新冠肺炎疫情防控指揮部發布的通報指出，2020年3月下旬，專門成立涉疫大數據與流行病學調查組，進行數據覈實（data verification）和流行病學調查（epidemiological surveys），全面覈查（comprehensive examination and verification）全武漢市殯儀館（funeral parlors）、醫療機構（medical institutions）、公安機關（public security authorities）以及社區等多個部門的數據，對新冠肺炎確診病例、死亡病例進行線上比對、去重、補全。線下對所有涉疫地點數據進行全採集，包括髮熱門診（fever clinics）、醫院、方艙、隔離點（quarantine locations）、涉疫社區，以及公安、司法、民政等部門管轄的監所、養老機構（elder care homes）等特殊場所，對所有病例個人信息全採集，通過醫療機構、街道社區、基層派出所（police stations）、患者所在單位及家屬（family members），逐人排查覈對（every case was checked and reviewed），確保每一個病例準確無誤，每一個數據客觀真實。
通報指出，出現數據差異是由於疫情早期患者數量持續增加（rapid rise in patient numbers），醫護人員力量不足且救治壓力巨大，客觀上存在遲報（delayed reporting）、漏報和誤報現象。數據差異原因還包括疫情早期核酸檢測（nucleic acid testing）和收治能力嚴重不足。2月20日以前，由於醫院牀位不夠，有些確診病人未能及時到醫院治療死亡（some patients died at home without being treated）未上報；疫情早期少數醫療機構未能與疾病預防控制信息系統對接（not linked with the online direct reporting system），疫情信息報送工作未同步跟上醫療機構擴容收治的進度。
通報稱，根據相關中國法律法規（relevant Chinese laws and regulations），本着對歷史負責、對人民負責、對逝者負責的原則（under the principle of "being responsible to history, the people and the deceased"），武漢市進行了數據訂正。
