There is an awesome shanghai restaurant in Nanjing Xinjiekou. Elvin wants to introduce his favorite cuisine — Shanghai cuisine to new foreign teacher Kate.

Elvin：Kate, I ordered some famous local Shanghai dishes for you to try today.
（Kate，我點了一些有名的上海菜，今天給你嚐嚐。）
Kate：Thank you, Elvin. They all look amazing!
（謝謝，David。看起來真棒！）
Elvin：Let's start with some appetizers. This one is smoked fish and the other one is seitan. Dig in!
（我們先從開胃菜開始吧。這道是薰魚，那道是烤麩。快開動吧！）
Kate：They're both delicious! I love the sweet flavor.
（兩個都很好吃！我特別喜歡甜的口味。）
Elvin：Then you're in for a treat! Shanghai food is pretty big on sweet soy flavor.
（那你今天會大飽口福！上海菜有很多紅燒口味。）
Kate：I see. Is that pork?
（這樣啊。那個是豬肉嗎？）
Elvin：Yes. It's actually the most famous Shanghai dish: soy braised pork. Try some.
（是的。那道其實是最有名的上海菜：紅燒肉。你嚐嚐。）
Kate：I like it. But it's a bit too fatty.
（嗯，我喜歡。但是有點太肥了。）
Elvin：Well, have some tea and try some squirrel fish.
（那喝點茶吧，再嚐嚐松鼠桂魚。）
Kate：Squirrel fish?
（松鼠魚？）
Elvin：Oh, it's the name of the dish. It's fish, not squirrel. It has a sweet and sour sauce.
（噢，其實它只是菜名。是魚肉，不是松鼠肉。酸甜口味的。)
Elvin, hands down, this is my favorite dish!
（毫無疑問，Elvin，這道是我今天最喜歡的菜。）
Kate：Great! Have more!

語言剖析

1. I ordered some famous local Shanghai dishes for you to try today.
local 當地的，地方的 dishes 菜
dish是餐桌上的一盤菜的菜的意思，這裏的菜可不能翻譯成vegetable蔬菜哦！
local用來強調上海的本土菜，local可以作形容詞，表示當地的，當地的醫院local hospital；當地居民local resident；當地最好的學校the best local school。
local也可以做名詞，表示當地人，比如我們一起到上海遊玩，將近中午，大家肚子都餓的咕咕叫，但是又不知道哪家餐廳好，於是就問當地人有何推薦：We asked one of the locals to recommend a you get lost, just ask a local for directions.如果你迷路了，找個當地人問路。.

They all look amazing! 看起來真棒！
老外用詞常常很誇張，great已經無法形容這種有種喜歡的心情啦！得用 amazing!得還記得第一課的時候Elvin的朋友John曾經說過Nanjing is an amazing city嗎？用以稱讚南京是一個很棒的城市。
比如你的朋友向你展示一個手工作品，用紙做出了一朵栩栩如生的玫瑰花，這時你驚歎到：Wow，you are amazing！How can you make it！I really like this rose！哇塞，相信你的朋友聽了之後一定非常的開心。

3. Let's start with some appetizers.
Let's start with some appetizers. 我們先從開胃菜開始吧。
appetizers是開胃菜的意思，不管是正統的西餐還是傳統的中餐，一般線上的都是開胃菜，來提升胃口，to work up your tite是胃口的意思。今天我沒有胃口吃飯，因爲期末考試掛科啦！I had no appetite because I didn’t pass the final exam! Such a sad story.
start with，從...先開始，for example，昨天小E老師作爲評委參加了一場英文比賽，這個比賽是以一首英文歌開場的，可以說，The competition started with a English song.

4. I love the sweet flavor.
flavor 口味
flavor表示口味，雖然taste也有味道的意思，但是老外通常會用taste動詞形式，品嚐食物。表示口味的話，flavor會更好哦！For example，我最喜歡的冰淇淋牌子提供很多口味。My favorite brand of ice cream comes in many flavors. There are chocolate，green tea and vanilla.哇塞有，巧克力爲，抹茶味還有香草味的！美滋滋！

5. Shanghai food is pretty big on sweet soy flavor.
Shanghai food is pretty big on sweet soy flavor. 上海以紅燒口味的菜聞名。
be big on 不是指上海菜有多大，不像東北菜那麼豪爽，其實上海菜的盤子蠻小的，be big on真實的意思是really popular；
同時，be big on 同時也可以表示you really like to do something/your personal favorites，你的熱愛，正在聽課的你或許很熱愛英語，你也可以說I am big on English.是不是比I like English高大上了許多。

6. hands down
hands down 毫無疑問
Hands done，表示無需手舞足蹈的解釋，毫無疑問，通常後面會加上est最高級的形式，Hands down, that was the ugliest sports car I've ever seen in my life.毫無疑問，這是我人生中見過的最醜的跑車。
哇，前兩天我在街上遇到了一位大美女，情不自禁的感嘆道，This girl is, hands down, the most beautiful one I have ever met.

手肘不要放在桌子上
