美國人把無目的的閒聊比作“向微風射擊”。Shoot的意思是“發射，開槍，開炮”，breeze的意思是“陣陣微風”。Shoot the breeze描述的就是幾個朋友在一起隨便聊天，或者一兩位知己清清靜靜地坐着閒聊的情景，這種感覺就如享受在受着微風吹拂一樣的愜意。該習語是第二次世界大戰時期的用語。當時候在微風中閒聊往事成爲軍人上船後或現在留在基地時最喜愛的消遣，尤其是指感傷地思索或述說。對話中“Don’t shoot the breeze.”的意思就是“叫別人不要閒聊。”
