Helen: This is Real English from BBC Learning English. I’m Helen.
Zoe:

Helen: Today we’re going to look at words and phrases that have recently become part of the English language.

Helen: Today’s new expression is ‘market leader’.

Zoe: Market leader. Market..

Helen: Well, it’s quite simple really. Market leader means either the company that sells the most of a particular type of product, or the product itself that sells the most.

Zoe:

Helen: well, listen carefully. if you had a company selling computers and you sold more computers than any other company, you would be the ‘market leader’.

Helen: that’s right. it can also mean the product.

Zoe: Market leader

Helen: yes. You could say Coca Cola is the market leader.

B: Yes, I think they are the market leader for small cars in the UK.

Zoe: Do you have a mobile phone?

Helen: of course, I can't live without my mobile.

Zoe: alright then, where did you buy it?

Helen: I bought it from a company that is the market leader.

Zoe: Why?

Helen: Well, the market leader usually offers quality products.

Zoe: I see.

Helen: And my mobile phone is very good. I’m not surprised it comes from the market leader.

Zoe: let's hope it will last you a long time.

Helen: I hope so too. Anyway before we go let’s recap – market leader –
