The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to present all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on earth.

An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if, in his word, “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill(鑽孔) deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above 0ºC. The seeds will be protected behind walls a meter thick and high-security door.

The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatureson the island are about eighteen degrees below 0ºC. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.

Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s safest gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first put forward the idea in the 1980s. But safety concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

One thing the tour books don't tell you about London is that 2,000 0f its residents (屠民) are foxes. They ran away from the city about centuries ago after developers and pollution moved in. But now that the environment is cleaner, the foxes have come home.

"The number and variety of wild animals in urban c城市的) areas is increasing," says Corner Jones. A survey of the wildlife in New York's Central Park last year counted 14 kinds of animals. A similar survey carried out in the 1890's counted only five kinds.

Several changes have brought wild animals to the cities. First, the air and water quality in many cities have improved as a result of the 1970s pollution-control efforts. Meanwhile, rural areas have been built up, and many animals have gone to the area outside the centre of a city. In addition, urban wildlife refuges (避難處) have been created. The Greater London Council last year spent $ 750, 000 to buy land and build 10 permanent (永久性的) wildlife refuges in the city. As a result, many birds are now living in the city. By 1970 the birds had died out east of the Mississippi because the DDT had made their eggs too thin to support life.

That year, scientist Tom Cade of CornellUniversity began raising the birds for release in cities, for cities afforded abundant food.[:]

Cities can attract wild animals without turning them harmful. The key is to create habitats where they are able to live happily. Such habitats can even be useful. In San Francisco, the local government is testing different kinds of rainwater control basins to see not only which ones keep the cleanest water but which will attract the most birds.

28. What is the passage mainly about?

A. 2,000 foxes returning to London.

B. Wild animals living in zoos.

C. Wildlife returning to some larger cities.

D. The great enemy of wildlife.

29. It can be inferred from the passage that

A. Londoners are putting more and more wild animals into their zoos

B. Londoners are happy to see wild animals return to their city

C. Londoners are trying to move wild animals back to the countryside

D. Londoners have welcomed the wild birds, but found foxes a problem

rding to the passage, the number of species of wildlife in New York's park.

A. is slowly going down

B. is the same as that in other cities

C. doesn't change too much

D. has more than doubled in the last century

31. Which of the following is NOT a reason why wildlife is returning to the cities?

A. There is plenty of food for wildlife in the city.

B. Wildlife enjoys being watched and fed in the cities.

C. More and more special living areas have been built for the wildlife.

D. Air and water quality has improved in the cities.

Last weekends, my kids along with few other kids from the neighborhood volunteered to help me wash my car. My 10-year-old daughter came up with the idea of 41 other people’s cars as well. While I kept myself busy in drying the car, the group walked up to me with a(n) 51 with beautiful images of smiles. They had “Free Car Wash” written on it and the 52 of their exercise was “smile”. It was pretty natural to see a team of kids ranging 5--11 years with the 53 to do something for others.

All that seemed 54 and came right from their heart. Nothing seemed to 55 to them: their playtime, the heat outside—they just wanted to 56 others and do something nice in the community!

I helped them make some fresh lemonade and brought out some additional 57 to help clean cars. Passers-by were 58 and one even shouted back to them saying “God Bless You, my kids…” One of them even tried giving them 5 dollars, which they refused. A pretty heartwarming 59 !

Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think 61 matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that oldest children, 62 are smart and strong-willed, are very likely 63 (succeed). The reason 64 this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child and give him or her a lot of attention. An only child will succeed for 65 same reason.

What happens to the 66 children in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, so they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, 67 , often gets special treatment. Often this child grows up to be funny. But a recent study saw things quite 68 (difference). The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in 69 lives. They usually 70 (follow) orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in the family. They took chances and they often did better in life.
