As a young ice-skater, I had flown pretty high, pretty quickly. My partner and I won the Canadian junior pairs championship when I was 14. Later I was thrilled to be picked to skate in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. But then everything came down.

We finished the 12th at the Games. I soon quit double skating and tried to continue in singles. But I wasn’t good enough; I didn’t even compete in the next two national championships. I felt like I was a somebody who had become a nobody.

I was 18 and had just graduated from high school when my mom told me, “You can’t just depend on skating to make a living. You’d better find a job.” I knew she was right. So I found a job at a restaurant where I waited at table and did anything else that needed to be done. In fact, I worked so hard that I had never got the chance to have a break. No one cared about that I had been an Olympic skater; I was judged only by how hard I worked.

That job taught me so many things. I learned, for example, how to deal with people. As an athlete, this was new to me. One day a man loudly called me over to his table and complained, “This milk is sour. I am not drinking this junk! I want my money back!” It was near the end of my shift (輪班) and I wanted to tell him how rude I thought he was. But I had learned that “the customer is always right” and a smile can go a long way. “I’m really sorry, sir. I’ll get you a free cup.” I said with a smile. When I brought him his coffee, his attitude changed. And he left me a tip!

My first job taught me that it is important to do your best at anything you try. I knew nothing about being a waitress when I started my job but by the time I left --- when I decided to return to skating --- I had earned a raise and my boss’s praise. They meant so much to me.

41. How did the writer feel after she picked up single skating?

A. Thrilled. B. Confident. C. Disappointed. D. Proud.

42. What does the underlined word “this” mean?

A. The job at the restaurant. B. The job in the ice-skating.

C. The people around the writer. D. The complaining man.

43. What did the writer do about the man’s complaint?

A. She told him how rude he was. B. She gave his money back.

C. She asked her boss for help. D. She apologized with a smile.

44. From the text we can know ________.

A. the author did very well at the 2008 Olympics

B. the author was successful as a young ice-skater

C. the author didn’t follow her mother’s advice

D. the author gave up her skating career

45. The text is mainly about ________.

A. the author’s skating life B. a lesson from skating

C. the author’s first job D. how to be a good waitress

Free and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meal. It sounds like the perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students.

Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation costs when they leave home to study at university.

Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps, an online accommodation forum (論壇) for parents and students, in advance of the introduction in September of £3,000 higher education top-up fees.

Their website says, “The principle behind Student Swaps is to enable students to
literally swap (交換) family homes.” The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with suitable matches. So those from one town/city could swap with those from a different town/city.

The site describes itself as offering a “cost-free accommodation alternative … at a time of growing student debt”. There is no charge for the service at the moment but Ms. Barnham and Ms. Flude intend to introduce a £10 annual fee if it becomes established.

However, the National Union of Students (NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound appealing to struggling freshers, it lacks any formal regulation.

Veronica King, NUS vice-president of welfare, said, “The fact that this scheme has even been suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation.” Recent research has shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years, in a bid to cut down on the cost of a degree.

“This is worrying, as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is, rather than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for some a key part of the student experience --- living away from home.”

46. A “cash-strapped” student means one who________.

A. lacks money B. prefers to stay at home

C. is careful with money D. wants to change cash

47. What is Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude’s purpose of launching Student Swaps?

A. To provide cheaper accommodation for students.

B. To let students stay close to their universities.

C. To help students spend less on accommodation costs.

D. To let students exchange ideas freely online.

48. What can students do on Student Swaps?

A. They can find students to exchange homes with.

B. They can make friends with students from a different city.

C. They can borrow money to pay for their higher education.

D. They can voice their opinions against the rising cost of a degree.

49. Now many students would prefer a university ________.

A. which can give them free accommodation

B. which is not far away from their homes

C. which offers the best courses

D. which can offer home-cooked meals

50. What would be the best title for the text?

A. High Cost Troubles University Students in UK

B. Student Swaps is Welcomed by Students in UK

C. Two Mothers’ Good Intention to Help Students in UK

D. Website Helps Students Live at Someone Else’s Home

D

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Which statement do you prefer? Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it’s probably struggling to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time for you to move a step to a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, statistics show that our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be and it seems we are much stricter with ourselves. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to strengthening the confidence and changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image and stay confident is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you are usually too strict with yourself or too stubborn and can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, go straight to a shop to buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.

The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far too subjective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and the style of doing things and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat (拍) yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Never submit to your negative self-image! Good luck!

51. You need to build a positive self-image when you ________.

A. dare to challenge yourself B. feel it hard to change yourself

C. are unconfident about yourself D. have a high opinion of yourself

52. According to the passage, our self-images ________.

A. have positive effects B. are probably untrue

C. are often changeable D. have different functions

53. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?

A. To keep a different image of others. B. To make your life successful.

C. To understand your own world. D. To change the way you think.

54. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to prepare for your success. B. How to face challenges in your life.

C. How to build a positive self-image. D. How to develop your good qualities.

55. Who are the intended readers of the passage?

A. Parents. B. Adolescents. C. Educators. D. People in general.

第II卷 (滿分35分)

第一節:閱讀表達(共5個小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)

閱讀短文,並按照題目要求用英語回答問題。

Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her success. I was lying. What I actually wish for her is failure. I believe in the power of failure.

Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be an uncertain victory. First-time success is usually a piece of luck. First-time failure, by contrast, is expected. It is the natural order of things.

Failure is how we learn. I have been told of an African phrase describing a good cook as she who has broken many pots. If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had a dinner with a group of chefs, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much certainty their failures gave them.

I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each week I am aware that
one column is going to be the worst column. I don’t set out to write it. I try my best every day and I have learned to cherish that column. Often in my columns of poor quality, I am trying to get through something I’ve never done before, something I’m not even sure can be done.

My younger daughter is a trapeze artist (盪鞦韆演員). She spent three years putting together an act. She did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change the act, but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored.

So she changed the act. She risked failure and public embarrassment in order to feed her soul. My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures. I hope I can tell her, though, that it isn’t the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.

56. What’s the writer’s lie to his granddaughter? (No more than 6 words)

57. What does the writer want to express by giving the experience of different people? (No more than 15 words)

58. What does the underlined phrase “by contrast” mean? (No more than 5 words)

59. Why does the writer’s daughter change the act? (No more than 10 words)

60. Do you agree with the last two sentences “I hope I can tell her, though, that it isn’t the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.”? Why or Why not? (No more than 25 words)

1.信的開頭和結尾已給出,但不計入總詞數;

2.可根據內容要點適當發揮,但不要逐條翻譯;

As you know, my ID card and student card are very important to me. I was very worried and even sleepless. It was such a pleasant surprise that I’d like to express my thanks to you. What a good example you have set for me to learn from!
