I went to my first music festival with my friend this summer. Unlike the majority of festival-goers we did not buy tickets. Instead, we volunteered as festival servers for Oxfam. We each worked in exchange for a free ticket to the festival.

Leeds Festival is a large music festival which takes place at Branham Park. It takes place towards the end of August, and thousands of people attend each year. There were several different stages, each suitable for a different music taste. As well as the great music on offer, there were also funfair rides, food outlets and a silent disco, amongst other things. I love silent discos: everyone has a set of headphones with two channels and music is played through the headphones. As a result, people can be dancing and singing along to completely different songs!

When we were not working, we were free to enjoy the festival. We saw a wide variety of artists across the weekend. My favorite day was the Sunday — in my opinion this had, by far, the best lineup (陣容). I really enjoyed seeing Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend and, of course, Arctic Monkeys, which are popular bands attracting thousands of people.

Although it was August, I could not believe how cold it was at night! We camped for five nights — a bit longer than the general public — and it was freezing every night! However, we had a really fantastic campsite. People who work at festivals stay in a different campsite to the general public. Our campsite was smaller, quieter and a lot cleaner! I had a great time and will definitely be returning next year!

24. How did the author attend the music festival?

A. By buying a ticket. B. By accompanying her sister.

C. By acting as a waiter. D. By slipping there secretly.

25. Why did the author love the Sunday most?

A. Because she was free.

B. Because she got more tips.

C. Because there were many bands.

D. Because there were fewer customers.

26. What does the author think of her campsite?

A. Remote. B. Wonderful.

C. Dirty. D. Cold.

27. What can be the best title for the passage?

A. Volunteers in a Music Festival. B. My First Music Festival.

C. Love Attending Music Festivals. D. Music Festivals Are Popular.

C

Although some objects are ordinary, people can still find the stories behind them. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually makes them so extraordinary. Such is the case with an old leather shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glance it does not look like much. It is a woman’s shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique about this shoe is where it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail (小路) used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there is not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1500 stairs carved outface? Or did she throw away goods that she didn’t need in order to travel lighter?

Over 100,000 people with “gold fever” made this trip hoping to become millionaires. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of starvation and exposure to the cold weather.

The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks each weighing up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least 40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must have been a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made it to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.

28. Why is the woman’s leather shoes considered unusual?

A. Because it was found on a famous trail.

B. Because it was an important clue to life in the past.

C. Because it at one time belonged to a VIP.

D. Because it was a fashionable shoe at that time.

29. According to this passage, many people who went to Alaska ___________.

A. eventually became millionaires

B. were not properly equipped

C. prepared well for the dangerous journey

D. brought with them many shoes

30. The Canadian government made gold seekers bring one year’s supplies with them in

order that ___________.

A. they would not die of hunger and cold

B. the army would have enough food for fighting a war

C. they would change these goods with the Eskimos

D. the supplies would make Alaska rich

31. No matter what happened to the woman who owned the shoe, ___________.

A. she must have lived a happy life

B. she certainly dropped the shoe on purpose

C. her adventurous spirit is definitely admired

D. her other shoes were equally fashionable

D

Now adays more and more businesses use conferences as a means of discussing new plans of the company. As people are paying more attention to the environment and green problems, more businesses are looking for ways to reduce their negative effect on the environment. Many businesses do this by using Web conferencing.

Web conferencing is a technology that allows people to communicate more effectively over the Internet. It’s an easy way of hosting and attending conferences without having to leave the office. Each of the people involved in a Web conference will be posted a paper invitation to the conference with the time and date of the Web conference on it. When the conference is ready to begin, all participants (參與者) must sit at their computers and they will be connected over the Internet.

With Web conferencing all participants attend the conference from the comfort of their own desk. Obviously, in doing this no fuel is used in traveling to and from a conference, and less work time is taken up in attending a conference.

Any material to be used during Web conferencing is simply e-mailed to all the participants before the conference. Participants can then either choose to print material or read it on screen. This not only saves paper but also greatly reduces mailing costs for the business.

As a conference hall or business center isn’t being used, it means that the only power that is used is the power used by the participants’ personal computers. Similarly conference organizers don’t have to arrange for food or overnight accommodation (住處) for participants of their conferences. All this means that less energy is used.

Often in business some companies actively choose to do business with other companies that do many things to reduce their negative impact on the environment. And Web conferencing helps you show other businesses that you are willing to work hard for the green cause.

So Web conferencing is much cheaper and greener and more people are willing to host and attend a Web conference.

32. According to Paragraph 1, many companies use Web conferencing because _______.

A. they want to do something to protect the environment

B. they are interested in using any new technology

C. they believe that Web conferencing is more convenient

D. they haven’t enough money to hold a traditional conference

33. The participants of a Web conference ___________.

A. will be posted many paper materials

B. are required to sit in an office together

C. will spend more work time in participating in the conference

D. will receive an invitation before the conference

34. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Ways of hosting a Web conference.

B. Ways of protecting the environment.

C. Impact of Web conferencing on costs.

D. Green benefits of Web conferencing.

35. Which of the following words best describes the author’s opinion about a Web

conference?

A. Environment-friendly. B. Useless.

C. Inconvenient. D. Money-consuming.

第二節(共5小題; 每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項爲多餘選項。

We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on. 36 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

Get Out of Bed Earlier

If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish. 37

Do the Important Tasks First

Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones. 38 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won’t miss the important ones.

Reduce Interruptions

If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration.

When you’ve got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voice mail. 39 Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.

40

A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day.

When you’re working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break, go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you’re facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it’s easier to deal with.

A. Stay Focused On Your Work

B. Take Breaks When Necessary

C. If you have an office door, close it.

D. Or simply to get a calm and organized start.

E. If you work like this, you’ll usually save time.

F. Would you want me to make your day longer?

G. I can’t magically make all your days 25 hours long.
