Mary Krupa became friends with the grey squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after spotting them running around and wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the “Squirrel Girl”.

Mary started bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. She posted similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Mary and her squirrels became an Internet hit.

Growing up in a neighborhood outside State College, Mary was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn’t chat with people very much. She was later diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. “The squirrels are actually a good way to break the ice, because I’ll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and we’ll just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them,” she said. “I am a lot more outgoing.”

And in case you’ re wondering how Mary is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the stage properly, and they’ll grab it. But getting to that part took a while. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though.

This year, Mary is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer and educate people on how to protect the environment. As for her furry(毛茸茸的) friends, Mary plans to stay in the area and visit them as often as she can.

26. How did Mary manage to take photos of squirrels wearing hats?

A. By putting them in cages.

B. By playing music to them.

C. By attracting them with food.

D. By approaching them quietly.

27. Which of the following can best describe Mary?

A. Patient and caring. B. Confident and strong.

C. Sociable and healthy. D. Traditional and hard-working.C

Last week, a 15-year-old student became a hero. Zaevion Dobson, threw himself on top of three girls as gang(黑幫) members released a lot of bullets for a shooting the day before. Dobson traded his life for the girls’ safety; he died after being struck by a bullet.

The shooting — and Dobson’s heroism - got national attention and even attention from the President. And Fulton High School headmaster Rob Speas commented: “You really don’t make a decision in those moments. You just react. And the way Dobson reacted was to take care of other people. A kid made a quick-thinking decision to take care of others." “He’s right, and Dobson's heroism speaks well of his family and his community. Football encourages quick-thinking ability, but how people react in that quick-thinking is a reflection of the values they’ve absorbed over a lifetime. No man has greater love than one who lays down his life for his friends.”

We’d like to live in a world where such heroic tendencies are common, but if they were common, then they wouldn’t be heroic, would they? But surely we’d like to live in a world where selfless heroism is more common. Unfortunately, courage and bravery to protect others seem obsolete to many people today.

Primary school students are told they can’t play tag(捉人遊戲)because it involves touching. College students cry for safe spaces. At Oberlin, even ethnic restaurant food is too much to bear. These days, it seems, we are less likely to praise heroism than victimhood. With that sort of culture, people like Zaevion Dobson seem even more admirable.

Yet the world, as recent events show, still calls for heroism on a regular basis. And it seems to me a society that praises heroism, rather than victimhood, is a society that is likely to have more heroes than victims. Perhaps we should consider making some changes.

28. What do we know about Zaevion Dobson?

A. He became a hero for saving three girls.

B. He was killed by three girls in a conflict.

C. He set up a scholarship fund in his name.

D. He was the head of the school football team.

29. What caused Zaevion Dobson’s behavior according to Rob Speas?

A. His moral values. B. School education.

C. A casual reaction. D. His quick-thinking ability.

30. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “obsolete" in Paragraph 3?

A. Attractive. B. Welcome. C. Unpopular. D. Useful.

31. What does the author suggest society do in the last paragraph?

A. Value lives more than anything else.

B. Value heroism more than victimhood.

C. Pay more attention to public education.

D. Attach more importance to safety education.D

A new “Rembrandt” painting created in Amsterdam is making headlines around the world. However, the authentic-looking masterpiece is not the work of the 17th-century Dutch artist. It is a new painting that uses technology to imitate Rembrandt’s technique so perfectly that it could easily be mistaken for one created by the great artist himself.

It took a team 18 months to complete the clever fake. Called the “Next Rembrandt,” it uses data and technology to bring one of the greatest artists of all time back to life.

The team began by collecting data from the Dutch artist’s 346 paintings to help them imitate his technique, choice of color, structure, and topic, as closely as possible. Once ready, the individual elements were put together to form the face and the bust (半身像)in the same size as the original paintings created by the Dutch artist. The team then used technology to add depth to the 2D image. Once ready, a 3D printer was used to bring the “Next Rembrandt” back to life — a portrait of a white male between 30 and 40 years old, wearing black clothes, a white collar, and hat.

An expert in the team says the goal of the project was to start a discussion about how data and technology could become an essential part of the art world. While the project did receive some criticism from a few experts, many art historians including Rembrandt experts were incredibly supportive. They even acted as advisors to ensure that the “Next Rembrandt” would be a masterpiece — one that even the famous Dutch artist would be proud of.

Born in Amsterdam in 1606, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn is one of the world’s most famous artists. The productive painter was famous for his portraits thanks to his ability to grab realistic emotions. Unfortunately, like many artists of his time, Rembrandt’s talents were not recognized during this lifetime. The artist died penniless in 1669, after suffering through many years of hardship.

32. What appeared in the media’s headlines according to Paragraph 1?

A. A Dutch artist. B. A new technology.

C. A new “Rembrandt” painting. D. An art exhibit in Amsterdam.

33. Why did the team start the project?

A. To try to use data and technology on art works.

B. To make a new masterpiece by Rembrandt.

C. To prove new technology is great.

D. To create an art alternative.

34. From the last paragraph, we can know Rembrandt .

A. was famous for painting scenery. B. was born in Amsterdam in 1669.

C. was world-famous when he was alive. D. suffered a lot when he was alive.

35. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Computer Created “Rembrandt” Painting B. Experts Work Hard on a New Rembrandt
