1. 特指上文提到過的人或物。如：

We have a cat and two dogs. The cat is black and the dogs are white. 我們養了一隻貓和兩隻狗，貓是黑的，狗是白的。

2. 特指說話雙方都知道的人或物。如：

Open the door, please. 請把門打開。

Pass me the dictionary, please. 請把詞典遞給我。

3. 用於帶後置定語的名詞前，表示特定的人或物。如：

Pass me the magazine on the desk. 請把桌上的雜誌遞給我。

The man who wrote the book is a friend of mine. 寫這本書的那個人是我的一個朋友。

比較：

We need the boy who knows French. 我們需要這個懂法語的男孩。(特指談到的某個懂法語的男孩)

We need a boy who knows French. 我們需要一個懂法語的男孩。(泛指任意一個懂法語的男孩)

4. 用於比較級前，特指兩個被比較的對象的一個。如：

Of the two brothers, the younger is more interesting. 在這兩兄弟中，年輕的這個更有趣。

There are two books on this subject, but I am not sure which is the better. 關於這個題目的書有兩本，但我不肯定哪一本更好。
