葡萄牙史上有一位作家獲得了諾貝爾文學獎，它就是1998年的得主——若澤·薩拉馬戈 José Saramago
他的代表作《失明症漫記》是一本腦洞小說，但是講述了一個極其黑暗沉重的故事，就和他的其他作品一樣，浸透着強烈的社會批判意識。
這部小說在2008年還拍成過電影，綠巨人主演：

His works, some of which can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the theopoetic human factor. The Nobel committee praised his "parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony", and his "modern skepticism" about official truths.
