One day when I was 12,my mother gave me an order:I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.h

In the library,I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. But one morning,he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.

There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的)to my dog. My eyes ran across the title,Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book,I borrowed it from the library for the summer.h

I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly,I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog,and I was the little boy in the book. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something:I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.

Years later,my mother was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

25. Why did the author’s mother order him to borrow a book?

A. Because she wanted to cure his problem. B. Because the author was a lazy student.

C. Because the public library was near. D. Because borrowing books was cheaper.

26. What can we learn about the author’s dog?

A. It was one of his favorite pets. B. It was secretly stolen from him.

C. It was adopted by someone else. D. Its name was Amos.

27. What was the function of the book the author borrowed from the library?

A. It reminded him of his childhood. B. It opened a door to his reading.

C. It proved his mother was wrong. D. It improved his imagination.

28. Which one could be the best title of the passage?

A. Mum’s Strict Order B. The Charm of a Book

C. Reunion with My Beagle D. My Passion for Reading

C

Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smart phone to see how many ‘likes’ you’ve received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the notification sound that someone has sent you a message? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We check our phones all average of 150 times a day,and around 30%of the total time spent online is dedicated to social media.

Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health. This is something particularly affecting young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they are to be depressed. The study found that exposure to“highly idealised life of peers on social media causes feelings of envy”. Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition, which has been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships. Other research by Glasgow University found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.

Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.

29. According to the passage, what might be damaging our mental health?

A. Using smart phones too frequently. B. Getting too many ‘likes’.

C. Being addicted to social media. D. Longing for more messages.

30. According to the research, people may feel depressed because______.

A. they believe they have no real-life friends

B. they desire to be part of the real world

C. they are ignorant about social media.

D. they thought others are living a better life

31. The underlined word “hooked” is closest in meaning to______.

A. addicted B. relaxed C. depressed D. embarrassed

D

Tyler Skiuzacek’s father,Patrick, could not sleep through the night. It was 2007,and Patrick had just returned from a year in Iraq, where he served in the U.S. Army. Patrick Skluzacek was energetic and happy when he left for Iraq,Tyler says. But when he returned,he was unhappy and drinking alcohol too much. It turned out Patrick was suffering from sleep panic attacks. Patrick would wake up every night. His heart would beat too fast. He would sweat. The nighttime panic attacks prevented Patrick from feeling good the next day, because he was so tired.

Almost 10 years later,Tyler was in a position to help his father. He thought he could make a computer program that might help his father. So he entered a competition in Washington,D.C,trying to solve the problem Tyler’s father and other U.S. war veterans(老兵) were having. People called them “night terrors.” The students had 36 hours to come up with a program. They called it myBivy. That name comes from bivouac, a military term for a safe place to sleep.

The application uses a smart watch and a smart phone together. The watch tracks the wearer’s heartbeat. It sends the data to the program on the smart phone. Research shows that a person’s heart rate will increase right before a night terror. So if the wearer’s heartbeat started to rise,myBivy would respond. The smart watch would vibrate and gently wake up the sleeping person. That was enough to prevent a night terror from happening.

Patrick wore the watch for two weeks to get used to it. Then,Tyler turned on the application. On the first night, the vibrations from the watch prevented 10 nightmares. Patrick said he had not slept that well in many years. Tyler and his team won the contest in Washington, D.C.. The prize was $1, the group tried to raise more money from investors, and they were surprised when they took in over$25,000. By the spring of 2016,Tyler and his team were testing the app with volunteers, and hoped to make it available to the public soon.

32. What might be the cause of Patrick’s problem?

A. His drinking habit. B. His experience in the war.

C. His family troubles. D. His sleeping disorder.

33. We can learn from the second paragraph that______.

A. many other veterans suffer similar problems

B. people look down upon the night terrors

C. the US government tries to help war veterans

D. myBivy was named after a great soldier

34. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. How effective the app is. B. How to download the app.

C. How the app works. D . How to design the app.

35. What does the author probably think of the future of myBivy?

A. Valueless. B. Controversial. C. Tough. D. Promising.

第二節(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項爲多餘選項。

In the digital age, copying someone else’s words is easy, but getting caught copying is even easier. When Melania Trump recently spoke at the Republican convention, she used some of the same words that Michelle Obama had used at the Democratic convention in 2008. Within hours, news spread around the world with the claim that Melania Trump had plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech. Students and teachers at universities in the U.S and elsewhere were shocked. 36

What is plagiarism?

37 That person could also be called a “literary thief” or a “plagiarist”.

Why is plagiarism a serious problem?

It’s our own worst fear,to have that thing that we created stolen from us,and it’s the same as our words. That thing that we created is essential to who we are. 38 . Academics are especially aware of the nature of plagiarism because their work is essentially the creation of ideas and putting them into words.

One of the possible punishments for plagiarism at U.S. universities is dismissal from the school. Students may fail a course or be given a letter of censure (譴責) that stays on their school record. Professors or researchers who plagiarize may damage or end their careers.

Plagiarism is easy to find

Before the digital age we live in,plagiarizing was harder. You had to write out the words you copied. But now anything can be copied and pasted. In the past, teachers would have to work hard to prove that work was copied.40 The plagiarism checking software programs used by many students and universities include Turnitin, Grammarly,Duplichecker, and iThenticate. Nobody is going to get away with it.

A. How to avoid plagiarism

B. Stealing our words is as serious as if stealing our child.

C. Consequences of plagiarism

D. Plagiarism is to copy someone else’s written work without giving them credit.

E. Nowadays, some software programs will help you avoid plagiarism.

F. They learn from their early years in school that copying another writer’s words is wrong.

G. But nowadays, all you have to do is run a paper through a plagiarism detection software.

Secondly, set up a goal what is not too high, in another words, don't put too much pressure on yourself. Thirdly, find a way to relax you occasionally. Dear Li Hua,

I’ve just received your letter. I know learning a foreign language can be challenging for some people. However, there are many things you can do to overcome these difficulties.

Firstly, it is a good habit to do some reading every day and remember some typical sentences. Practice makes perfect. Therefore, doing enough exercise can definitely improve your listening and writing. As for examination anxiety, you’d better go to bed earlier than usual. Having milk should help you get a sound sleep. In addition, consult your teachers if necessary.

I do hope my advice is helpful to you.

Sincerely yours,

Jack Smith
