東漢末年，董卓把持朝政，兇狠專橫。各諸侯，舉袁紹爲盟主，帶各路兵馬殺向洛陽，討伐董賊。董卓派華雄迎戰，連殺數將。關羽立下軍令狀，願去斬華雄的首級。曹操佩服關羽，敬一杯熱酒，關羽說：“ 酒先放在這裏，我去戰罷再喝。”說完，拍馬出陣。當關羽提華雄人頭進帳時，那杯酒還微微燙手。董卓聽說華雄被殺，派呂布領十五萬兵駐守洛陽城外的虎牢關。袁紹派八路大軍前去攻打。虎牢關下呂布連殺數位將領。這時，張飛衝殺上去，連戰五十回合。關羽見張飛勝不了呂布，便舞動青龍偃月寶刀前去助戰。
三匹戰馬，丁字擺開，廝殺三十回合，仍勝不了呂布。劉備見狀掣寶劍，騎黃鬃馬斜刺過來，三個人把呂布圍在當中，走馬燈般的輪流廝殺，呂布畢竟難敵三人，漸漸覺得難以招架，便朝劉備虛晃一戟，拍馬衝出了包圍圈逃回虎牢關。
