So, what’s the attraction? If you’re an A or B-cup in your 20s, the ease and comfort of them is obvious, but if you’re in your 40s and an E-cup, it’s quite a different story.

Many are allergic to the nickel in the wiring and clasps.‘Surprisingly, lots of women like soft cupped bras even though they have a big bust. They don’t want their breasts to be so on show as they would be with a cleavage-enhancing underwired plunge bra. Soft bras minimise their breasts and let them sit flat.

But can they really work on big-busted women? Four differently sized women tested soft cups versus underwired bras and Becky John gave her verdict on which fitted best.

When you’re carrying the weight of an enormous bosom, you want some sturdy straps so they’re not digging into your shoulders.

The balconette version of the soft bra gave Frankie a great cleavage, helped by the supportive padded cups, vertical seaming and curved underband. In comparison to the soft cup, the underwiring enhances a fuller appearance.

Eva Von Mitzka, 59, is an actress. She lives with her partner in Teddington, Greater London. She is a 34D and says:

Apart from just one uncomfortable time when the under-wiring poked out and started prodding me in the ribs, I’ve never had any problems.

Eva said she felt more feminine in this underwired bra. However, she was a little worried about the thin double straps, but thought it would be a great evening bra.

This supportive soft-cup bra fitted Eva so well. It gives such a pleasing uplift and smooth line that it would be perfect under a T-shirt. In fact, Eva felt so supported, she was surprised it wasn’t underwired.
