In Britain milk is supplied to each house in bottles.

supply作爲名詞具有供給物;儲備物質;糧食的意思

例如：

The country's only supplies are those it can import by lorry from Vietnam.

provide與supply

兩者均可表示“提供”，常可作同義詞使用，兩者在句型搭配方面有很大的相似性，所以放在一起講述。 表示“爲某人提供某物”，兩者的主要句型如下：

(1) provide [supply] sb with sth

He provided us with a lot of useful information. 他向我們提供了許多有用的信息。

They used the money to supply the school with new textbooks. 他們用這錢給學校買了新課本。

但是在現代英語中，偶爾也可見到省略介詞with的用例，即在provide和supply後接雙賓語，但比較少見，考生宜慎用。

(2) provide sth for sb和supply sth to sb

The hotel provides a shoe-cleaning service for its residents. 這家旅館爲旅客提供刷鞋服務。

Two huge generators supply power to farms in the area. 兩臺巨型發電機給該地區的農場供電。

按傳語法，在這兩個結構中，動詞provide與介詞for搭配，動詞supply與介詞to搭配，但在現代英語中，此用法規也打破，有時可見到兩個句型混用介詞for和to的場合。

比較以下同義表達：

正：Sheep provides wool for us. 羊爲我們提供羊毛。

正：Sheep provides us with wool. 羊爲我們提供羊毛。

正：The school supplied textbooks for the students. 學校爲學生提供教科書。

1. offer用作動詞，也表示“提供”，但表示主動提供(所以主語通常是人)，其後可接雙賓語，若雙賓語易位，用介詞 to 引出間接賓語。如：

Offer the guests some coffee.=Offer some coffee to the guests. 給客人們來點咖啡。

表示主動願意做某事，其後可接動詞不定式，但不接動名詞或從句。如：

她表示願意開車送我去車站。

誤：She offered driving me to the station.

誤：She offered that she could drive me to the station.

正：She offered to drive me to the station.

2. 除表示主動提供外，還有一個常見用法是，表示在買賣中出價。比較以下句子：

He offered me the computer for 500 dollars. 他開價500 美元把那部電腦賣給我。

He offered me 500 dollars for the computer. 他出價500 美元向我買那部電腦。
