第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題,每題2分,滿分40分)

A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration(誇張) will do no harm when it shows the person’s unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important
for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment so that the person so packaged is not a commodity, but a human being, lively and lovely.

A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted. Youth however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self - satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing.

The snow-capped mountain itself is a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the company of the elderly is like reading a thick book of good edition, which attracts one so much that one is unwilling to part with it. As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

underlined word in the first paragraph is closest to the word ______ in meaning.

A. decoration B. motivation C. movement D. identification

can be concluded from the text that ______.

A. people should be packaged at all ages B. people should be packaged in a special way

rding to the author, if you want to keep in harmony with nature, you should ______.

A. dye your hair B. make up at a young age

C. follow the ageing process D. give up fame and wealth

underlined sentence means that elderly people ______.

A. are usually packaged like a finely-made book

What will power your house in the future?Nuclear, wind,or solar power?According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US,it might be leaves — but artificial (人造的) ones.

Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用) researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process.

The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化劑)lar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.

Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,” said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society.

The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity.

The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now,the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesn't need pure water. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water.

With the goal to “make each home its own power station” and “give energy to the poor”,scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.

h of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produce electricity?

ficial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygen

hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cell

D

For the rest of the week, Joe practiced kicking football hard, concentrating on his each kicking. Sometimes Joe hit the ball straight. Sometimes it went wide again. But it seemed that the more he believed he could do it, the easier it was.

“I’m not a joke now,” thought Joe. “Not a joke at all!” But a practice wasn’t like a real match and his boots were still not giving him enough power.

He should have told his mum and dad about it straight away but, of course, he didn’t. He was always shy to ask for things.

Finally, late on the night before the match, he could hold himself back no longer.

“Dad, I haven’t got any proper football boots …” he said.

“Ah,” said Dad, “I might be able to help you there.”

At the words, Joe was excited. New boots! He thought. “He’s got me some new boots! He must have got me them for Christmas,” thought Joe, “But now that I’m in an important match, he’s giving them to me early. Wonderful!”

Dad went upstairs. Joe excitedly tried to watch the football preview on TV. He wasn’t playing for Manchester United or Liverpool, of course, but he was part of it all now; part of the thrill. His legs twitched with every kick on the screen. His head shook with every centre. And all the time, his mind was racing ahead to his own great game the next morning, in his super new boots.

It was ages before his dad came downstairs again. He put a large pair of shiny black boots in front of Joe.

As he stared at them, the boy felt as if someone had poured ice into his brain. The boots were awful!

“Good, eh?” said his dad.

Joe found it hard to speak. He had never seen anything like them before.

They weren’t low-cut, soft or…. They had big, hard square toes, great big long studs(鞋釘) and they were high at the ankle. They were his dad’s old rugby boots, polished up.

Joe was filled with disappointment. They had been good boots, quality boots. And they were his size. Joe’s feet were enormous for his age. But he could imagine what everyone at school would say.

“ …,” he finally gasped, “ should be exactly my size.”

“At least I won’t slip,” he thought, “the studs are like sharks’ teeth!” Then he couldn’t help thinking about those in Ashton’s windows, which he had been longing to get.

That night, he went to bed early but he didn’t sleep much because he was so terrified of being late. He woke at 1.17, 2.49, 3.37, 3.43, 4.55. The numbers jumped off the big face of his digital clock. Then 10.40!

Ahhh!!!

He jumped out of bed. He seized the clock. 6.03! 10.40 had been only a dream. At eight, breakfast time, it was raining like mad.

“Might get called off, Joe,” suggested his mum.

“Never, Mother. …will not be like cricket,” said his dad. “Will take a lot to stop football.”

Joe checked everything for the tenth time. He put his boots at the very bottom of his large bag, well out of sight. He had decided to put them on when nearly everyone had left the changing room. Then his classmates wouldn’t make fun of him. Soon, it was time to set out.

“Good luck!” said his mum, giving him a kiss.

His dad had his coat on, ready for his morning deliveries. “Want a lift to school?” he said. “I hope to get down to watch you when I’ve done the trip to Eccles.”

“Okay,” said Joe.

As Dad’s van carried him down the hill to school, Joe was thinking about the boots. If only … but no, he had to stop that kind of thinking. It doesn’t matter about the boots, he told himself.

67. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that _____.

C. Joe had been playing football greatly

D. Joe had not looked forward to joining in the football game

D. “At least I won’t slip,” he thought, “the studs are like sharks’ teeth!”

69. The night before the football match, how many times did Joe wake up before he jumped out of bed finally?

A. three B. four C. five D. six

70. From the story, we can infer that Joe’s father is likely to be a(n) _____.

A. dentist B. engineer C. rugby D. milkman

How to Choose Your Courses and Universities?

Every year, before the College Entrance Examination, senior school graduates have to face the problem of choosing their courses and universities. Our school had a survey on it recently.

Senior middle school graduating students of our school have different opinions on how to choose their courses and universities. The survey shows that 45% of the students think they should choose their courses and universities according to their interests, for interest is the mother of success, and it will be a miserable thing for students to have to spend most of their time studying what they have no interest in.

Most of the students(around 55%), however, insist that main consideration should be given to the needs of our society, for, they argue, not everyone can find the job they like best. Besides, interest is not something unchangeable. And they believe their interests can be developed and changed.
