Hannah’s daddy was a teacher who barely made enough money to raise his six kids. Hannah wore hand-me-downs from her older sisters. For Christmas she usually got used dolls and books. As a child, she longed for the beautiful clothes, cars, and homes that she often saw on TV and in magazines.

Several years after she graduated from college, she became part-owner of a successful interior decorating business in Manhattan. Her life became what she had dreamed about as a little girl. Become a successful business woman, and she had a handsome, wealthy boyfriend. She owned her own company near Central Park. She took skiing vacations in the winter and mountain resorts in the summer. At the age of 30, Hannah was on top of the world.

Then she underwent a routine health checkup, and her perfect world broke down. Her doctor told her that she h ad pancreatic(胰腺) cancer. Surgery was necessary to determine how much the cancer had spread. Hannah was operated on a week later. The surgeon suspected that cancer had spread to vital organs. Ten days later, the lab confirmed his suspicions.

Hannah’s doctor said he could treat her with chemotherapy and painkillers, but it was just a matter of time before the cancer killed her. She asked how much time. He gu essed that she had less than a year to live. How can this be, Hannah wondered. Doesn’t this always happen to someone else?

A couple of weeks later, she visited another cancer specialist. He examined her and read her medical and lab reports. He said he agreed with her surgeon. “If you have any once-in-a-lifetime plans, do them now,” he advised.

Instead, Hannah spent her last months in her company, tended to by hospice workers. Her family and friends visited her regularly. The moment before she died, she opened her eyes and tried to say something to her boyfriend. She squeezed his hand weakly.

French writer Frantz Fanon once said: “To speak a language is to take on a world, a culture.” Since the world changes every day, so does our language.

More than 300 new words and phrases have recently made it into the online Oxford Dictionary, and in one way or another they are all reflections of today’s changing world.

After a year that was politically unstable, it’s not hard to understand the fact that people’s political views are one of the main drives of our expanding vocabulary. One example is “clicktivism”, a compound of “click” and “activism”. It refers to “armchair activists ” – people who support a political or social cause, but only show their support from behind a computer or smartphone. And “otherize” is a verb for “other” that means to alienate (使疏遠) people who are different from ourselves – whether that be different skin color, religious belief or sexuality.

“We had all the words around Brexit in the last update and we are now starting to see all the words around Trump coming into the dictionary,” Angus Stevenson, Oxford Dictionaries’ head of content development, told The Guardian.

Lifestyle is also changing our language. For example, “fitspiration” – a compound of “fit” and “inspiration” – refers to a person or thing that encourages one to exercise and stay fit and healthy.

The phrase “climate refugee” – someone who is forced to leave their home due to climate change – reflects people’s concern for the environment.

According to Stevenson, social media was the main source for the new expressions. “People feel much freer to coin their own words these days,” he said.

But still, not all newly-invented words get the chance to make their way into a mainstream dictionary. If you want to create your own hit words, Stevenson’s suggestion is that you should not only make sure that they are expressive and meaningful, but also have an attractive sound so that people will enjoy saying them out loud.

28. What’s the purpose of the quotation from French writer Frantz Fanon?

A. To serve as the topic of the passage.

B. To present one of the major views of the society.

C. To show the fact that language mirrors the culture in a way.

D. To lead to the topic of the whole passage.

29. What does the underlined word “coin” in the second-to-last paragraph probably means ?

A. use B. record C. create D. change

30. How is the article mainly developed?

A. By giving examples.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By following a timeline.

D. By presenting research findings.

31. According to Stevenson, to make the words you invent popular, they should_______.

A. be easy to remember

B. have unique and expressive meanings

C. have the attractive sound

D. be meaningful and sound catchy

“If you had to choose, would you prefer a woman with a hot body or a beautiful face?” It’s a classic question that every woman wants to ask their boyfriend. Of course, he would prefer both. However, only a small number of women are blessed with Victoria’s Secret model genes.

I once read an article that said, nowadays, some women wouldn’t let their boyfriends see their real face. They wear concealer(遮瑕霜) even when they go to bed and get up earlier so that they have enough time to put on some makeup before he wakes up.

Looking perfect means a lot to them. They are easily affected by the current standards set on beauty.

They go to extremes in search of a unified and recognized image of beauty, and once they find it, they work hard to get and maintain it.

Part of the reason they behave this way is people impose stereotyped ideas about beauty on them. The other part of the reason is they are not confident enough about themselves and easily give in to the fancies of men.

So, instead of asking men to answer this question, women should bear in mind that the scope of beauty is getting broader and broader. Only when they really appreciate their own beauty, will they become more confident.

“I feel free, once I realized I was never going to fit the narrow pattern that society wanted me to fit in,” reads a quote from Ashley Graham, the first plus-size model to appear on the cover of Vogue.

We don’t want to see similar beautiful faces on the street, looking like products from the same assembly line.

Don’t label yourself a certain kind of woman. Be the woman that gets to decide who you are and how you should look. Being different is beautiful; being confident is beautiful; being real is beautiful.

32. Why are women unwilling to show their boyfriends real face?

A. Because they may be lacking in confidence.

B. Because they appreciate their made-up appearance.

C. Because wearing concealer means a sense of safety for them.

D. Because they are easily affected by the current beauty standard.

h of the following is true according to Ashley Graham?

A. Making up enables a woman to look attractive.

B. She is hard to fit in this society.

C. Women should be confident to recognize their difference.

D. She believes beauty doesn’t lie outside but inside.

may be the main purpose of the passage?

A. To tell us the beauty of women mat ters little.

B. To advise women to appreciate their own beauty.

C. To define the current beauty standard.

D. To encourage women to wear concealer for confidence.

can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Inner beauty outweighs outside one

B. Confi dence makes beauty

C. Be confident without doubt

D. Appreciate yourself as you are

Most of us will have days or weeks when we can’t make as many things as we’d like. We have jobs, families and busy lives, which means occasionally you’ll be out of time to sit down and make art.

Here are some simple tips that can help your creative work.

1. 36

If you want to think more about your artwork, read it just before you fall asleep. Studies show that your brain remembers more and thinks subconsciously (下意識的) about the information you process just before going into REM (rapid eyes movement) sleep. You might even dream about what you were thinking about or were doing just before sleep.

2. Take notes whenever ideas come

No matter what time of day, do keep a pen beside your bed, and always carry one in your handbag or pocket. Don t be afraid to take notes in public, in elevators, 37 .

3. Use commute (通勤) time

38 . Read, listen, think, make lists, or mentally check off your progress. Using commute time means that when you do sit down to create work, you’ve often done the heavy thinking and are ready to dive into the practical work. It is an obvious one, but it has been tried and tested.

4. Don’t overlook thinking time

When you’re not making artwork, make time to simply think. It seems like many artworks are made after months or even years of living inside your own head. 39 , using this time to think hard about your artwork can pay off greatly. You can often surprise yourself with how much progress you can make if you clock the thinking hours. Thinking time is time well spent.

40 .

A. Read before you fall asleep

B. or anywhere the inspiration strikes

C. Make conversations about your artwork

D. Try some of these ideas out and see what works for you

E. Whether you're at work, walking pets, or doing the dishes

F. Use the time you're driving or on the train to and from work

G. or whatever you think about
