One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?

Listen--Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.

Help them--If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra(額外的)pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.

Be there for them--Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve(值得)to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time!

_____ --Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice creams, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. But planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re both old!

21. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should .

A. give him or her some advice B. calm him or her down

C. just listen unless asked D. share your feelings as well

22. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words?

A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. A friend is easier lost than found.

C. Life without a friend is death. D. A man is known by his friends.

23. Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph?

A. Make plans. B. Enjoy yourself.

C. Understand your friends. D. Play with your friends.

24. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to find a good friend. B. How to help friends in trouble.

C. How to make more friends. D. How to be a good friend.

B

I had a lot of teachers that I loved. However, the teacher that I remember most was Mrs. Green from Marianna, Florida. She was my 5th grade teacher. Since I was a new student, not only in her class, but at the school, she made my time there much more pleasant. I immediately began to like her. She was really funny and I knew that she liked me. She made learning fun. I remember one day for Christmas holidays, she taught us how to make ornaments (裝飾物) from eggs. My parents still have some of the ornaments I made.

She made me leader for many group projects and that made me feel special. I think that would make any child feel special, especially when a child is in a new place with no friends. She made me want to be like that. Not to pick a “favorite” student, but to make every student feel that they are special. That year,I received the Presidential Academic Award (美國總統學術獎). I was really proud and so were my parents.

Looking back at it, I think the reason why I did so well was that I felt important. Students do better when they feel like they are important or loved. Mrs. Green always gets to know her students and forms personal relationships with them, which I will try to do some day. I just hope that there will be a student who finds me to their favorite teacher as I found her to be mine.

25. The author’s life in the new school was very .

A. happy B. common C. hard D. boring

26. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A. The author was once received by the President.

B. The author was Mrs. Green’s favorite student.

C. The author was the pride of her parents.

D. The author always felt lonely in Mrs. Green’s class.

27. What will the author probably do in the future?

A. Become a leader. B. Become a teacher.

C. Become an artist. D. Become the President.

C

I ran into quite a few language problems while vacationing with my family last summer. The most embarrassing was when my Mom apologized to the people we were staying with because her “pants were dirty”. They looked at her in amazement (吃驚), not knowing how to react. You see, Mom had fallen over and gotten mud on her jeans. But in Britain, “pants” means underpants or knickers, not trousers as it does back home.

Katie-From America

I went to stay with a friend on the west coast last summer. Her flat was on the first floor of a high-rise building so I got the lift up. Then I wandered round for ages looking for her flat but couldn’t find it. Fed up and tired, I finally had to go out to find a phone box. She explained that her flat was on the first floor, which for me meant the ground floor.

David-From Britain

When I asked for the “restroom” in a big department store, people kept directing me to a room with seats where I could sit and “rest”. It took me years to get through to someone that I only wanted the toilet!

Tom-From America

Last summer we went on a two-week family touring holiday, so Dad hired a car over the Internet. This was an old vehicle (汽車) and there turned out to be lots of things wrong with it. When he phoned the hire company and tried to explain that the lock on the boot was broken, they thought he was talking about footwear! He had no idea their word for “boot” was “trunk”. In the end we went to a garage and just solved the problem.

Mary-From Britain

A. a place to repair cars B. a car

D

My mother always told us there is no use crying over spilt milk. That means you should not get angry when something bad happens and cannot be changed. She also told us you have to break some eggs to make an omelet(煎蛋卷). This means you have to do what is necessary to move forward.

My mother believed you are what you eat. A good diet is important for good health. She would always give us healthy food. She liked serving us meat and potatoes for dinner. The meat and potatoes can also mean the most important part of something. It describes someone who likes simple things.

People always said my father was the salt of the earth, because he would never pour salt on a wound (傷口), or make someone feel worse about something that was already a bad experience. However, sometimes he told us a story that seemed bigger than life. So we had to take it with a grain(粒)of salt. That is, we could not believe everything he told us.

My manager at work does not always know what is going on in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Something may appear to be free, but there may be a hidden cost. When we fail to see problems at work, the manager tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem. I once made a big mistake at the office and felt silly. I had egg on my face.

Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch a football game on television. But I do not like football. It is not my cup of tea.

I hope I have given you food for thought, that is, something to think about.

第二節 書面表達(滿分25分)

One possible version

Dear Li Hua,

I have received your letter and I’m glad to give you some suggestions. First of all, don’t be disappointed. Many students find it difficult to write well. In my opinion, if you want to improve your writing, you can do several things.

To begin with, do some study with set phrases and sentence structures. Keep a list of them and make some sentences with them. And, in order to write well, you must learn to read much, which will contribute to building your vocabulary and help to better your writing skills. Besides, you’d better recite some good passages, where you can enjoy many beautiful sentences and learn some useful expressions. What’s more, keeping a diary is an effective way. You can have a try without delay and it’s necessary to practise writing as often as possible.

I hope you can follow these suggestions and make progress.

Yours,

Miss Wang
