The ass and his purchaser
A man wanted to buy an ass. He went to the market, and saw a likely one. But he wanted to test him first.
So he took the ass home, and put him into the stable with the other asses. The new ass looked around, and immediately went to choose a place next to the laziest ass in the stable.
When the man saw this he put a halter on the ass at once, and gave him back to his owner.
The owner felt quite surprised. He asked the man, "Why are you back so soon? Have you tested him already?" "I don't want to test him any more," replied the man, "From the companion he chose for himself, I could see what sort of animal he is."
【譯文】
驢和買驢的人
一個買主到市場上去買驢，他看中一頭外表不錯的驢，但是他想要牽走試一試。
他把驢牽回家，放在自己其他的驢之間，這驢四處看看，立即走向一頭好吃懶做的驢旁邊。
於是，買驢的人立刻給那頭驢套上轡頭，牽去還給驢的賣主。
賣主感到很奇怪，他問買主：“你怎麼這麼快就回來了?”買主說：“不必再試了，從他所選擇什麼樣的朋友來看，我已經知道他是什麼樣了。”
寓意: 物以類聚，人以羣分。人們往往喜歡跟與自己相同的人交往，所以，我們可以根據一個人的朋友來推斷他的爲人。

A pair of Oxen were drawing a heavily loaded wagon along the highway, and, as they tugged and strained at the yoke, the Axletrees creaked and groaned terribly. 楚國有個人坐船渡江時，他不小心把自己的一把寶劍掉落江中。他馬上掏出一把小刀，在寶劍落水的船舷上刻上一個記號。船靠岸後，那楚人立即從船上刻記號的地方跳下水去撈取掉落的寶劍。他怎麼找得到寶劍呢?船繼續行駛，而寶劍卻不會再移動。像他這樣去找劍，真是太愚蠢可笑了。

A wolf was almost dead with hunger. A house-dog saw him, and asked, "Friend, your irregular life will soon ruin you.
"Why don't you work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly?"
"I would have no objection," said the wolf, "if I could only get a place." "I will help you," said the dog. "Come with me to my master, and you shall share my work."
So the wolf and the dog went to the town together. On the way the wolf saw that there was no hair around the dog's neck.
He felt quite surprised, and asked him why it was like that?
"Oh, it is nothing," said the dog. "Every night my master puts a collar around my neck and chains me up. You will soon get used to it.""Is that the only reason?" said the wolf. "Then good-bye to you, my friend. I would rather be free."

狗和狼
一隻狼快要餓死了，一隻狗看見後問他：“你現在的無規律的生活一定會毀掉你，爲什麼不像我一樣穩定地幹活並有規律地獲得食物呢?”
狼說：“如果我有個地方住，我沒有意見。”狗回答說：“跟我到主人那裏去，我們一起工作。”於是狼和狗一起回到了村子。
在路上，狼注意到狗的脖子上有一圈沒有毛，他很奇怪地問爲什麼會那樣。
“噢，沒有什麼，”狗說，“我的主人每天晚上都用一條鐵鏈子拴住我，你很快就會習慣的。”“就是因爲這個原因嗎?”狼說道，“那麼，再見了，我的朋友，我寧願選擇自由。”
狗和狼寓意: 自由比安樂更重要。
