The 35-year-old London native spoke to the Journal about China's hotel scene, sketching on planes and the airport where he doesn't mind a flight delay.

你多久出行一次？
One week I'm in Beijing, the next, I'm somewhere else in China. I go back to the U.K. about twice a year, Hong Kong and Chengdu once a month. And I'm all over China: In the last four years, I've been to at least 20 cities.
我在北京呆一週，下週我就會飛到中國的其他地方。我一年大概要回英國兩次，每個月去香港和成都各一次。可以說，我基本走遍了整個中國：過去四年中，我至少到過20個城市。Favorite airline?
最喜歡哪家航空公司？I try to travel by train as much as I can, but distances make it difficult, so more often, I'm on a plane. I always fly Dragonair when I come to Hong Kong. And around China, nearly always with Air China, mainly because of the routes.
我試着在能坐火車的時候就儘量坐火車，但路途遙遠的話坐火車就很麻煩了。所以更多的時候，我還是坐飛機。我去香港的時候一般會選擇港龍航空（Dragonair）。如果是在中國大陸地區，主要考慮到航線問題，我基本都會乘坐中國國際航空公司（Air China）的飛機。Loyalty program?
你加入了什麼常旅客計劃嗎？I'm not smart enough to do that sort of thing. I've been to Hong Kong at least 20 times. I really should get on that.
我可能不夠精明，目前還沒有想過這方面的事。我去了香港至少20次，確實應該着手加入個常旅客計劃。Favorite hotels?
最喜歡哪家酒店？In Hong Kong, I always stay at EAST Hotel. For someone like me, it's perfect: It's not just business, it's fun. When I'm in Chengdu, and generally in all cities in China, I don't have a regular place I stay at. Sometimes, I stay at the Shangri-La, sometimes at other places. I don't find the offerings in most Chinese cities that exciting at the moment. I think that will gradually change.
我在香港常住東隅酒店（EAST Hotel）。對於像我這樣的人來說，這是一個完美之選：它不僅是一家商務酒店，還充滿樂趣。但當我到成都或中國其他城市的時候，一般不會選擇固定的酒店入住。有時，我會住在香格里拉（Shangri-La），有時是別的酒店。我覺得，目前在中國的大多數城市，酒店設施都沒有達到讓人欣喜的水平，但我認爲這種情況應該會逐漸改變。Carry-on essentials?
出門必帶的行李？A Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook and a Pantel 0.9 millimeter propeller pencil. I don't need much. I sketch all the time. In meetings, it's useful to draw, to illustrate a point. On the plane, it's a good time to sketch. You don't have people bothering you, you can actually think design-wise. But on planes, I also like to not work. I read. I'm reading 'Wolf Hall' at the moment.

比較心儀的電子產品？I'm not a techie. I still read proper books. I don't always bring my iPad. I don't have an iPhone. But I always bring my iPod. Music is important.

最喜歡哪個機場？Hong Kong. Ken Shuttleworth, my boss, was looking after that project when it was under construction. I've learned a lot about that building through him. Within China, I like Weihai Airport. It's not big or grand, but it's somehow quite nice. It's very friendly and quite bright. I've spent a lot of time waiting there because of various delays, but waiting was actually okay.
香港國際機場。機場在建時，我的老闆肯·沙特沃斯（Ken Shuttleworth）就負責這個項目。我也通過他對這個建築有了很多瞭解。在中國內地，我比較喜歡威海機場。它並不大也不豪華，但不知怎麼地就是感覺它很漂亮。威海機場還讓人覺得很舒適，看着也特明亮。因爲航班多次晚點，所以大把大把的時間都用來在那兒候機了，但等待對我而言是可以接受的。Advice to hotels?
想給酒店一些什麼建議？They should give more water. All you get are two small bottles. I don't understand why you don't get more.
他們應該提供更多的水。你在酒店入住只能得到兩小瓶水，我不明白我們爲什麼不能得到更多的水。Memorable souvenirs?
有哪些難忘的紀念品？I bought a small folding bike called an A-bike in a supermarket in Wuhan. It's really small and extremely light, only 13 pounds. A lot of folding bikes aren't very portable, but this one really is. It was around 900 yuan ($141). It's hard work to ride it, but it's a cool thing.
我曾在武漢一家超市買了一輛A-bike摺疊式自行車。它真的很小，而且極輕，只有13磅（約5.9千克）。很多摺疊式自行車都不方便攜帶，但是這車真的可以。它大概花了我900塊錢。要想騎好這車還真不是一件容易事兒，但它很酷。Worst travel experience?
最糟糕的出行經歷？My wife works for the U.N., and in 2007, I went to see her in Sudan. I had a big problem leaving the country because of all the paperwork you needed to get out. But it's kind of amazing too, because you don't get to go to places like Sudan very often.
我的妻子在聯合國任職。2007年，我跑到蘇丹去看她。但當我準備啓程離開那個國家時卻遇上了大問題，因爲還需辦理很多離境文書手續。但從另一方面看，這經歷也挺有意思的，畢竟你不必經常到像蘇丹這樣的地方去。How do you deal with jet lag?
你怎麼倒時差？I wouldn't bother to arrive on a Saturday and take the weekend to get over it, as some people say. I think you should just arrive on Sunday and go straight to the office on Monday. Just attack the day.
有些人說，應該在週六那天到達目的地，然後花上整個週末的時間來倒時差。我不會刻意這樣做。我覺得你就應該在週日到達目的地，然後週一直接走進辦公室。週一全力去應對工作就對了。Tips on traveling in China?
在中國出行的小貼士？Bring along entertainment. Chances are you're going to be delayed. I get delayed four or six hours in an airport, regularly. I definitely wouldn't go anywhere in China without a book.
隨身攜帶可供娛樂消遣的物品，因爲你很有可能會遭遇飛機延誤。我就常常經歷航班晚點，一般都遲到四到六個小時。所以在中國，去哪裏我都會帶上一本書。
