Jeremy Hampden has a large circle of friends and is very popular at parties. Everybody admires him for his great sense of humour----everybody, that is, except his six－year－old daughter, Jenny. Recently, one of Jeremy's closest friends asked him to make a speech at a  wedding reception. This is the sort of thing that Jeremy loves. He prepared the speech carefully and went to the wedding with had included a large number of funny stories in the speech and, of course, it was a great success As soon as he had finished,Jenny told him she wanted to go home. Jeremy was a little disappointed by this but he did as his daughter asked. On the way home, he asked Jenny if she had enjoyed the speech. To his surprise, she said she hadn't. Jeremy asked her why this was so and she told him that she did not like to see so many people laughing at him!

have a large circle of friends=sb has/have a lot of friends
circle of friends：朋友圈（circle：圈）
Ex:
political circles：政界
artistic circle：  藝術圈子
financial circles：金融界
academic circles： 學術界

ybody admires him for his great sense of humour－everybody, that is, except his six－year－old daughter, Jenny.
admire sb for sth:讚美某人...
that is:也就是說，作插入語（第一個破折號後爲對前面句子的補充說明）
Ex:
sense of humour：幽默感
sense of shame： 羞恥感
sense of honour： 榮譽感
sense of balance：平衡感

3. This is the sort of thing that Jeremy loves.
the sort of thing: 那一類的事情
Ex:
people of every sort and kind：各種各樣的人
and that sort of thing：以及諸如此類的事情

4. Jeremy was a little disappointed by this but he did as his daughter asked. 
this:代詞，指代前面提到的女兒要回家的事
as:以...的方式

5. told him that she did not like to see so many people laughing at him.
laughing at him:現在分詞短語（文中用了see sb. doing sth.結構）
感官動詞+賓語+現在分詞短語

本課出現的間接引語

As soon as he had finished,Jenny told him she wanted to go home.
=>直接引語可表達爲：
'I want to go home,' she said

On the way home, he asked Jenny if she had enjoyed the speech. To his surprise, she said she hadn't. Jeremy asked her why this was so and she told him that she did not like to see so many people laughing at him.
=>直接引語可表達爲：
'Have you enjoyed the speech?'
'No, I haven't .'
'Why is it so?'
'I don't like to see so many people laughing at you'

祈使句的直接引語<=>間接引語
1)把say 改成ask/tell
2)直接引語動詞如爲insist/suggest，間接引語用that從句，後面should（可省略）+動詞原形

'Open the door for me, please,' she said.
=>She asked me to open the door for her.

'Don't make so much noise,' she said to here children.
=>She told her children not to make so much noise.

'Stay to lunch,'he insisted.
=>He insisted that we (should) stay to lunch.
'Come with me,'he suggested.
=>He suggested that I (should) go with him.
