I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures. Many people pretend that they understand modern art. They always tell you what a picture is 'about'. Of course, many pictures are not 'about' anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. They notice more. My sister is only seven, but she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. She came into my room yesterday.
'What are you doing?' she asked.
'I'm hanging this picture on the wall,' I answered. 'It's a new one. Do you like it?'
She looked at it critically for a moment. 'It's all right,' she said, 'but isn't it upside down?'
I looked at it again. She was right! It was!
參考譯文
我是個學藝術的學生，畫了很多畫。有很多人裝成很懂現代藝術的樣子，總是告訴你一幅畫的“意思”是什麼。當然，有很多畫是什麼“意思”也沒有的。它們就是些好看的圖案，我們喜愛它們就像我們喜歡漂亮的窗簾布一樣。我覺得小孩子們往往比任何人都更能欣賞現代繪畫，他們觀察到的東西更多。我的妹妹只有7歲，但她總能說出我的畫是好還是環。昨天她到我房裏來了。
“你在幹什麼呢？”她問。
“我正把這幅畫掛到牆上去。”我回答說，“這是幅新畫，你喜歡嗎？”
她用挑剔的目光看了一會兒。“還可以吧。”她說，“不過，是不是掛倒了？”
我再次看了看畫。她說對了！是掛倒了！
第三部分 LANGUAGE POINTS
1、I am an art student
an art student:學藝術的學生
fine arts:美術
2、They always tell you what a picture is 'about'.
=They always tell you what a picture means.
課文中這句話可以直譯爲：他們總是告訴你某一幅畫是“關於”什麼的，也就是一幅畫的“意思”是什麼。about放在引號裏，一是指這些人談論畫的時候經常用到這個詞，二是表示一種諷刺，因爲有些畫沒有任何“意思”
3、We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material.
them:指patterns（圖案）
in the same way that ... :以同樣的方式...
4、I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else.
appreciate:欣賞 ＝ understand and enjoy
anyone else:除了young children以外的任何人
5、I'm hanging this picture on the wall,
It's a new one.
one:指代籠統意義上的picture
6、But isn't it upside down?
反問句構成：助動詞否定形式提前
7、She was right! It was!
省略成分：It was (upside down)！
第四部分 KEY STRUCTURES AND USAGE
whether引導的賓語從句
not:是否,or not可省略
1）從句次序按陳述句的語序排列，主謂不顛倒
2）whether 後也可以跟不定式短語（見例句（5））
3) If 在表示 “是否” 的時候可以被whether所取代; If在表示 “如果” 的時候不可以用whether取代
if不可以與or not 連用
Ex:
（1）She always tells me whether my pictures are good or not.
（2）I don't know whether you are telling the truth(or not)
（3）I'll see whether I can do anything about it.
（4）I forgot whether I had returned the money to him(or not).
（5）I can't decide whether to go or not.
