The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost. Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post office. Sam was sure that the wallet must have been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his front door. It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said: 'A thief, yes, but only 50 per cent a thief!' Two months later, some more money was sent to Sam with another note: 'Only 25 per cent a thief now!' In time, all Sam's money was paid back in this way. The last note said: 'I am 100 per cent honest now!'
參考譯文
整個村子很快知道, 有一大筆錢丟失了. 當地的屠戶薩姆.本頓在把存款送往郵局的途中把錢包丟了. 薩姆確信那錢包一定是被某個村民撿到了, 可是卻不見有人來送還給他. 3個月過去了, 後來在一天早晨, 薩姆在自己的大門外發現了他的錢包. 錢包是用報紙包着的, 裏面有他丟失的錢的一半, 而且還附着一張紙條, 上面寫着 : “一個小偷, 是的, 但只是一個50%的小偷!” 又過了兩個月, 又有一些錢送還給了薩姆, 又附了一張字條 : “這回只是25%的小偷了!” 很快, 薩姆全部的錢都用同樣的方式還了回來. 最後的那張字條上寫道 : “我現在是一個100%的誠實人了!”
第三部分 LANGUAGE POINTS
1、The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost.
the whole village：全村的人
a large sum of：一大筆（錢）
a sum of money:一筆錢
had been lost：過去完成時的被動語態
2、Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post office.
the local butcher:插入語，對Sam Benton的補充說明
e taking his savings to the post office：完整表達爲e he was taking his savings to the post office
while doing 是一個省略形式；這種情況應具備兩個條件
1)這個動作的主語跟主句的主語一樣
2)這句話一定要是進行時態
3、Sam was sure that the wallet must have been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him.
be sure that...:對...肯定，確信...
must have been found：表示一種推測
比較
must have done 表示對過去的推測
must have been done 表示對過去被動的推測
4、It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said: 'A thief, yes, but only 50 per cent a thief!'
half the money=half of the money
50 per cent a thief=50 per cent of a thief
25 per cent a thief=25 per cent of a thief
Ex:
I am 100 per cent honest now!
together with：連同...

1）ed and then

3）some passed before...
some more money：注意more的用法
