When a light passenger plane flew off course some time ago, it crashed in the mountains and its pilot was killed. The only passengers, a young woman and her two baby daughters, were unhurt. It was the middle of winter. Snow lay thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away. When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find. During the night, it got terribly cold. The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case herself, but it was too small. Early next morning, she heard planes passing overhead and wondered how she could send a signal. Then she had an idea. She stamped out the letters‘SOS'in the snow. Fortunately, a pilot saw the signal and sent a message by radio to the nearest town. It was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash.

不久前，一架輕型客機偏離了航線，在山區墜毀，飛行員喪生。機上僅有的乘客，一位年輕的婦女和她的兩個女嬰卻平安無事。此時正值隆冬季節，地上積着厚厚的雪。這位婦女知道，即使最近的村莊也有數英里遠。天黑下來的時候，她把提箱當作小牀，把兩個孩子放了進去，又把所有能找到的衣服都蓋在了孩子們身上。夜裏，天冷得厲害。這位婦女儘可能地靠近孩子，甚至自己也想鑽進箱子裏去，只是箱子太小了。第二天一大早，她聽到頭頂上有飛機飛過，但不知道怎樣才能發個信號。後來她有了一個主意。她在雪地上踩出了 "SOS"這3個字母。幸運得很，一位飛行員看到這個信號，用無線電給最近的城鎮發了報。不久，一架直升飛機飛抵飛機失事現場，來搭救這幾個倖存者。

two baby daughters: 2個名詞構成的合成名詞(其複數形式爲直接在後面的名詞後加s)
baby:在這裏是形容詞，指"幼小的"
2個名詞構成的合成名詞的3種複數形式
1) 後面的名詞變爲複數形式
armchairs, babysitters, flyovers, hand signals
2) 前面的名詞變爲複數形式
passers-by, mothers-in-law, commanders-in-chief
3）2個名詞都變爲複數形式
men friends, women doctors, gentlemen farmers
2、It was the middle of winter.
middle:在某個時段的中間
Ex
the middle of the day(中午)
the middle of December（12月中旬）
the middle of the 1960s（60年代中期）
3、she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find.
covering:現在分詞短語表伴隨性動作
she could find:修飾clothes的定語從句
4、The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case herself, but it was too small.
one can/could 和 possible同義，都表示"儘可能......"
5、It was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash.
to引導的不定式爲目的狀語。
It was not long before...:固定句型，表示"不久就......"（也可以用 It will not be long before...表示將來可能發生的事）
