我們先來看第一句俚語He is as rich as Croesus . Croesus是公元前六世紀小亞細亞呂底亞國極富的國王，rich是“富有”， as rich as Croesus,像Croesus一樣富有，那就 是“極富有的”。 He is as rich as Croesus，就是“他極其富有”。
阿蕊總想嫁個有錢人，她嚮往那種揮金如土的生活，正巧一次晚宴上她結識了一位公認的 “鑽石王老五”，大家都說：“He is as rich as Croesus。（他極其富有。）”
阿蕊開始接近他，併成了他的情人，可過了一段時間，她向朋友訴苦說：“I thought he was as rich as Croesus, but later I found that was not the case.（我以爲他很有錢，但後來發現情況並非如此。）”

下面我們來看第二句話It is over the top 是“頂端，頂部”，over the top,在頂端上面，那就是過了頭了，它的意思就是“過火或過頭”。 It is over the top，就是 “這太過分了。”
阿華和阿波一起去看電影，看完後兩個人都覺得拍得不好。阿華說：“The film’s violent ending is completely over the top.（影片結尾的暴力場面太過分了。）” 阿波也認爲很過分，並說：“And I think the hero tends to go over the top.（而且我認爲主角的表演很過火。）”
