More than 11,000 athletes from around the world have arrived Rio de Janeiro, hoping to take home Olympic glory for their home countries. Unluckily, only a handful will achieve those dreams—and what’s worse, some might go bankrupt(破產) in the process.

Usually, the United States doesn’t spend a lot on its athletes. For the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the U.S. Olympic Committee had a budget of nearly $800 million, of which just 10.3% directly supported the athletes. That includes allowance, medical benefits and tuition assistance. Even if they win an Olympic medal, a thletes aren’t guaranteed a rich payday. The U.S. Olympic Committee awards team members a bonus for winning a medal: $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze.

It’s a common misunderstanding that Olympic athletes all benefit from commercial advertisements and sponsors. While that’s true of Olympic super stars like Michael Phelps, who has signed well-paid deals, many sports especially those that don’t enjoy great media attention and air time don’t pay well, even for athletes at the top of their game.

Many sporting super stars struggle to pay the bills for Olympic glory—not to mention the costs of traveling to Rio to compete – balancing their demanding training and competition schedules with a full-time career, or a series of part-time jobs. American runner Kerron Clement, who took home medals in Beijing and is competing in the Rio Games this year, has worked as a model and an actor. Emil Milev, a six-time Olympian in shooting, is a physical education teacher at a primary school in Tompa. Cyclist Mara Abbott works at the local famer’s market in her hometown of boulder, Colorado. She also teaches yoga and writes for a local newspaper.

24. Why may some American athletes go bankrupt ?

A. Because few of them have chances to win medals.

B. Because they have to pay various bills themselves.

C. Because the U.S. government has a very tight budget.

D. Because they are short of commercial advertisements.

25. Who works as an actor to pay the bills to take part in the Olympics?

A. Michael Phelps. B. Kerron Clement.

C. Emil Milev. D. Mara Abbott.

26. What is the author’s attitude towards the athletes?

A. Pitiful. B. Proud. C. Unsatisfied. D. Curious.

27. What can we infer fr om the text?

A. More than 11,000 athletes have taken home Olympic glory.

B. A gold medal winner will get $15,000 more than a silver one.

C. Some top players whose sports lack media attention aren’t well paid.

D. Emil Milev has taken part in the Olympics for five times.

Have you ever had trouble trying to choose a gift? Perhaps you need a birthday present for someone who is hard to please. How about clothing? You might be about choosing the wrong size, color, or style. Books or DVDs? You may not know enough about the person’s likes, dislikes, and interests. And giving money may not seem right. Well, how about a gift card?

A gift card is a card that is issued by a certain store. It’s worth a certain amount of money. It looks like a credit card, but it actually works like cash. A gift-card holder can spend the amount of money noted on the card in the store that issued it. These cards are big money makers. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they often see other things to buy, and they end up spending more money than the gift card is worth. Unused cards are another big source of revenue.

Gift cards are becoming extremely popular in many countries around the world. Why? People love the convenience—cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The receiver can select his or her own gift, and the giver doesn’t have to worry about finding just the right thing.

Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. An actual gift is a better reminder of the person who gave it. It helps us appreciate the thought and effort that went into the choice. The message of a real gift is more likely to be, “ I spent some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you.”

Often a gift card doesn’t pass on the same message as an actual gift. It may seem to say, “ I was in a hurry. I didn’t have time to think about what you really like.” In today’s busy world, gift cards are convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving gifts, which is to build a closer bond between the gift-giver and the gift-receiver.

28. The first paragraph is used to _________.

A. introduce the main topic

B. show the author’s attitude

C. describe how to choose a gift

D. explain how to use a gift card

29. What do we know about gift cards?

A. They are the same as credit cards.

B. They help stores earn more money.

C. They bring more customers to stores.

D. They are worth more money than they cost.

30. What is the advantage of giving an actual gift?

A. It is appreciated by the receivers.

B. It reminds people of their interests.

C. It shows the givers’ thought and effort.

D. It passes on the same messages as a gift card.

31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A. The relationship between the gift-giver and the gift-receiver.

B. The close bond between the gift cards and the actual gifts.

C. The real purpose of giving gifts.

D. The disadvantage of gi ft cards.

Russia, the United States and other countries are hurrying to control Earth’s northernmost territory: the Arctic. It is rich in oil and natural gas. The countries want to use these and other natural resources for their citizens and to sell overseas.

Russia has claimed a large part of the Arctic to develop natural resources, including oil. President Barack Obama recently approved drilling in an area under U.S. control. The project was the idea of the Shell Oil Company.

Bill Arnold once worked for the Shell Oil Company. “ There is no other place that I’ve ever been that is like this. So I am very interested in the preservation of the beauty of Alaska.” Mr. Arnold said he believes that new energy resources can be developed without harming nature.

But many environmentalists disagree. They are not satisfied with President Obama’s decision.

The Arctic has become more accessible because polar ice is melting much faster now than in centuries past. Many scientists point to climate change as the reason behind the melting ice. Climate change, they say, results from the use of fossil fuels, like petroleum oil for cars and other vehicles.

Russian development of the Arctic slowed after Western nations ordered sanctions(制裁) against Russia. The sanctions were meant to punish Russia for taking the Crimea from neighboring Ukraine. Western-based companies were forced to withdraw from partnerships with Russia.

Mr. Arnold says many countries are developing shipping projects through Arctic waters once the ice is unblocked. He also says it could be some time before Shell’s explorations affect U.S. energy production. He says it will be seven to ten years before those efforts begin to pay off with large-scale production.

D. They want to develop the Arctic.
