For the past 100 years, people believed middle age to be around 50 years old. This is a time when we start to grow old. However, new research says we have to change this. A study from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIAS) in Austria and Stony Brook University in New York says middle age now starts at 60 or even 65,or older. Why?

The biggest reason is that we are living longer. We are also healthier, we have better diets, we exercise more and we have more money to live in a nicer lifestyle. The IIAS said, M Since life expectancy has increased over the past several decades, and are continuing to increase, people once considered old should actually be viewed as more middle aged."

The study was not a worldwide one so perhaps not everyone in all countries can say they are middle aged when they are 65. The researchers looked at populations in 39 European countries, so this is good news for Europeans. Britain’s National Health Service warned against looking at this study and believing it to be 100 percent true. It said the researchers did not look at things which could reduce life expectancy: " We don’t know whether, for example, they factored (把......因素包括進去)in the possible impact of being unable to treat infections because of rising antibiotic (抗生素)resistance, or the increased numbers of people with diabetes (糖尿病)due to obesity." It recommended healthy living, eating and exercise as a way to live longer.

25. What do people believe for the past century?

A. People start to grow old when they are about 50.

B. Middle age is far beyond 50 years old.

C. People will die at around 50 years old.

D. Middle age is a time when people become ill.

26. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. The main reason why we are living longer.

B. The reason why middle age now starts at 60 or even 65.

C. Life expectancy has increased.

D. Middle aged people were once considered old.

27. What do Britain’s National Health Service’s words mean?

A. It believes the study to be true.

B. To live longer, one should live a healthy life.

C. There are more people who suffer from diabetes due to obesity.

D. The researchers didn’t factor in the possible impact.

28. What is the writer,s attitude towards the study?

A. Indifferent. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Objective.

In January 1958,Rachel Carson received a letter from her friend Olga Owens Huckins. Huckins lived in an area of Massachusetts where the state was trying to get rid of mosquitoes. They had used planes to spray (噴)a mixture of fuel oil and DDT (a pesticide, which can kill pests such as insects, weeds and rodents) all over the area around Huckins5 home. DDT was supposedly harmless but, the morning after the spraying, Huckins found several of her favorite birds dead outside her house. And the spraying did not even kill all of the mosquitoes; in fact, that summer there were more of them than ever before. Huckins asked Carson if she knew someone in Washington that could help prevent future spraying.

Carson had been hearing about DDT since a Swiss chemist discovered it could be used to kill insects in 1939. To many people, DDT seemed like a miracle substance. Farmers were excited about saving their crops from pests. Doctors and others were excited about saving people’s lives by killing disease-carrying insects. But to Carson, DDT appeared to be dangerous to all living creatures.

The more Carson found out about DDT and other pesticides, the more she realized that she needed to help stop future spraying. Carson decided to write a book about pesticides. She said," There would be no future peace for me if I kept silent. M She called her book Silent Spring.

Carson had spent her life studying, observing, and writing about nature. She was a trained biologist and a talented writer who knew how to present scientific information in compelling stories. Before Silent Spring, she had written other books from the perspective of fish, birds, islands, and oceans. Carson knew that all things in nature exist in a delicately (微妙地)balanced ecosystem.

In Silent Spring, Carson wrote that although the ecosystem can adjust to changes, it needs time. Carson believed that people in the 1950s were using pesticides carelessly. Nature didn’t have time to adjust, wrote Carson, because so many pesticides had been used in such large quantities in such a short time.

32. Why did Huckins write a letter to Rachel Carson?

A. To tell her some bad news. B. To turn to her for help.

C. To advise her to write a book. D. To ask her some questions.

33. Which of the effects the spraying of the mixture in Massachusetts had is right?

A. It killed pests such as insects, weeds and rodents around Huckins5 home.

B. It killed all of the mosquitoes.

C. It had bad effects on ecosystem.

D. There were more birds than ever before.

34. Who would not be happy with DDT?

A. Gardeners. B. Farmers. C. Doctors. D. Biologists.

35. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Rachel Carson’s research on nature B. Rachel Carson’s life

C. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring D. DDT's bad effects on ecosystem

New research suggests there is a simple and easy way that helps people to stop over-eating. They say that using smaller plates, knives, forks and glasses can reduce the amount of food we eat. Many of us tend 61 (use) the size of the plate as a measure of how much we can eat. If we use a large plate, we fill the plate with food, 62 often means we eat too much. Research from Cambridge University in the U.K. suggests that 63 (small) plates can lower the amount of food we eat. British people could reduce their calorie intake by up to 16 percent, _64 Americans could see a reduction of up to 29 percent in calorie.

The research team looked at the data from 6,711 people who took part in the eating trials. Dr Gareth Hollands, one of the 65 (lead) of the research, said that many people think it is obvious that the larger the portion size, 66 more people eat, 67 he said that until now, there was little research on this. He 68 (add) that it was wrong to think people ate too much because of a lack of self-control.

He said, " 69 (help) people to avoid over-serving themselves or others with larger portions of food or drink by reducing 70 (they) size, availability and appeal in shops, restaurants and in the home, is likely to be a good way of helping lots of people to reduce their risk of over-eating."

42. B 由下文"With a long knife, a man hacked(劈,砍) her on the neck too."

face down(面朝下)合乎情理。

44. D "the men were their neighbors"是一種非常特別的情況, 故用尤其是 (especially) 。

Maricel fell to the ground and lost consciousness."和後面的"she saw a lot of blood"可知此處應用woke up(醒過來)暗示小女孩受到襲擊後暈了過去,"醒過來"後發現有很多血。

47. D 由語境 "She also saw the feet of the men around her" 可以推測小女孩爲了活命裝死(dead)。

51. C 由下文語境 "Maricel’s family also didn’t have P50,000 for their hospital bills" 可以斷定小女孩家很窮(poor)。

53. C 由下文 "They were sentenced to prison."

Yes, a chef without hands." 下文中的using her wrists也是暗示。

58. A Hotel and Restaurant Management是酒店和餐廳管理,是一種培訓課程,故用course。

60. A 由後面的暗示a chef without hands可知,小女孩最後成了一名廚師(cook)。

61. to use

tend to do sth.

62. which

下文"he said that until now, there was little research on this."(直到現在,關於這一點的調查幾乎沒有)和上文是轉折關係,故用but。

這裏是減少食物和飲料的量, 用their代替food or drink, 形容詞性物主代詞their修飾size。

第二處:her → him。

第八處:or → and。

return to意爲"回到……",London不是副詞,to不能省略,因此應該在return後加to。

第十處:to → for。 be grateful to sb. for sth.

Dear Classmates,

The other day, one of our classmates was knocked down by a car at the crossing. It is not the car driver but the student himself who is to blame due to the fact that he ran through the red light.

Records show that an increasing number of people die in traffic accidents every year, most of whom walk regardless of speed limits, talk and laugh while riding bikes and cross the road without noticing the traffic lights. This will not only do harm to their own lives but also put other people in

danger. So many people violate traffic regulations that we should attach great importance to traffic safety.

Only when everybody is aware of the problem can we be safe on roads.

Yours truly,

Li Lei
