Five months ago, some time after the dinner, my mother gave me my “life’s importance,” a jade pendant(玉佩)on a gold chain. The pendant was not a piece of jewelry I would have 21 for myself. It was almost the size of my little finger, green and white,22 carved. To me, the whole effect looked 23 too large, too green, too splendid. I placed it in my box and 24 about it.

But these days, I think about my life’s importance, because my 25 died three months ago, just before my thirty-sixth birthday. And she’s the only person I 26 to tell me about life’s importance, to help me understand the life.

I now wear it every day. I think the carvings mean 27 , because the shapes and details, which I 28 seem to notice until after they’re 29 out to me, always mean something to Chinese people. And because I think about this all the time, I always notice other people wearing these same jade pendants, ones like mine. It’s as though we were all wished to something secret, so secret that we don’t even 35 what we belong to. Last weekend, 36 ,I saw a barman wearing one. 37 I fingered mine, I asked him, “where did you get yours?”

“My mother gave it to me,” he said.

I asked him why, a question that only one Chinese person 38 ask another; in
a crowd of Whites, two Chinese people are already like 39 .

“She gave it to me after I broke up with my wife. I guess my mother’s telling me I’m still worth something!”

And I knew by the 40 in his voice that he had no idea what the pendant really meant.

A

Recently it came to my attention that I had gotten into a bad habit. Whenever someone visited our one-bedroom apartment, I made sure to declare within the first five minutes, “Of course, we will be moving soon.”

This is, actually, a lie. These days, apartments in our high-rent Brooklyn neighborhood regularly sell for $50,000 above the asking price, and I have heard buyers manage to pay nearly a million dollars cash within 24 hours for a small house. My husband is an artist and I am a writer; we both teach for New York University. It is beyond us to buy one.

For a long time I got depressed with the fact, disbelieved it and denied it and spent my Sundays going from one open-house to another. I nodded along with the murmurs of sympathy I received whenever I described our living situation. I felt ashamed that our daughter’s bedroom is a small space carved out of our former bedroom.

But there is one thing: I’ve seldom experienced a true moment of depression in our home.

So this is my real thoughts on housing: the problem is not living in a small space as a family of four. The problem is the acquaintance who, upon hearing about our situation, bursts out remarking and insists, “Well, you can’t raise children in a broom closet!”

A few weeks ago, my 2-year-old daughter, who had already overheard me talking about housing, said unexpectedly: “Mommy, I never want to leave this home. We are warm and comfortable here.”

Her tiny little room is her pride and joy, and in our house-hood, or apartment-hood, we refer to it as “the warmest room in Brooklyn”. When a little boy recently stepped into her bedroom and said:“Why is this little room so small?” I felt a flash of shame. But it quickly passed. For one thing, my daughter didn’t seem to notice his comment. And by the time she is old enough to feel self-conscious about the size of her room, she’ll be able to understand that rather than giving her a big room in a big house with a big yard, we,ve chosen to spend tons of time with her and her brother, and to pursue our passions.

I often think of something a friend once was told by his beloved senior: “Your values are how you spend your money and your time.”

In the evening, I shower by night-light so the bathroom light won’t wake the kids. I step past the two room comers where my children sleep deeply, enter the other room, husband drawing at his desk, and joy rises inside me. I am content with this small beautiful home.

So, here is my promise: The next time someone comes over, I am going to push open the door to reveal the kitchen, bedroom, dining room, living room, playroom, my office, his office, exercise room, library, family room. I will say, “…”

A. she enjoys its small size

B. her friends all remark this way

Monthly Traffic: Over 2,000 million Description: The simple image sharer

What Is Imgur?

Imgur (pronounced, “Image-er”)is a simple image sharing and hosting website. Created in 2009 by Alan Schaff, who was a college Junior at the time, the site features lightning fast upload speeds and the ability to view and upload images without creating a username or logging in. Almost all of the images that appear on sites like Reddit are hosted by Imgur.

The site is not just a photo sharing site, however. Instead of hosting just photographs, Imgur is capable of hosting and displaying user-generated content like original artwork, animated gifs, and much more.

* The Imgur Community

Imgurians pride themselves on being one of the kindest, most accepting communities on the web. Unlike other sites, personal attacks are rare, and people generally behave themselves in the comment section. In fact, the comments are sometimes the funniest part of the site; don’t miss out by skipping the comment threads under each image.

Opening a user account on Imgur is free, and once you have an account you can upload up to 225 images to your own album without paying a dime for hosting. You can also earn up-votes for comments you leave and photos you upload. On the anniversary of the day you signed up, a small slice of cake will appear on your profile. This is your “cake day,” a day when you should celebrate by posting something funny to acknowledge your Imgur “birthday.” it Who Reads Imgur?

The site has a current Alexa ranking of 87 globally (43 in the U.S.), which means that there are only 87 other sites in the world that get more traffic during a three month period of time. The site currently boasts over 2,000 million page views each month. The site’s demographic is heavy on childless males aged 18-24, most of whom are college educated and browsing from school or work.

* Will I Enjoy Imgur?

If you enjoy visually stimulating material, posts that promise to “restore your faith in humanity,” and moving, feel-good stories, you will love browsing Imgur. If you’re just starting out, creating a username and password is a great place to start, since doing so will allow you to become a part of the community by commenting on and up-voting images right away.

One Word Of Warning Fair warning: this site is extremely addictive! Once you start clicking through the daily images, you might feel that you have tapped into the collective consciousness of the internet. That1 s because you have. Soon you will be among the other 2,000 million users per month who couldn’t stop browsing Imgur.

The oil from palms (棕櫚樹)has a wide variety of uses in many food and household products, but has caused heated debates because large areas of rainforest have been cleared to make way for large land to plant them. As the demand has grown, rainforests, particularly those in South East Asia, have suffered. Recently, an international team have found a gene (基因)that could make some of the trees produce more oil than others, through analyzing the crop’s DNA.

Professor Robert Martienssen, from the Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory in the US, said, “These large plant genomes (基因組)are very challenging to sequence (排序),in part because of the size, but also because they have a lot of repetitive sequences. We had to use some very advanced technology to do this.” Within this code, the researchers found the gene that made some of the trees produce more oil.

Dr. Rajinder Singh, from government agency the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, said, “The oil palm has three fruit forms. We have the thick-shelled type一the Dura; those that don’t have any shell—the Pisifera—but are not used for commercial production; and we have a third form produced as a cross between the thick shell and the one without the shell, which is known as the Tenera. It has a thinner shell, but more of the fleshy fruit to produce the oil, and it is the one used for commercial production. And we discovered that the gene producing this fruit form.”

While oil palm growers attempt to grow only the thin-shelled Tenera variety, up to 10% of the seeds may turn out to be the other less oily plants. Now the researchers say they can use the genetic information to identify the seeds that produce the thin-shelled Tenera variety. Prof. Martienssen said, “We can now use that gene in genetic testing, which will allow growers to know exactly what sort of tree they are planting before it produces fruit. It takes a long time for these trees to produce fruit, and by being able to predict exactly what sort of fruit that tree will produce, it will greatly assist growers.”

Dr. Ravigadevi Sambanthamurthi, from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, said, “This finding gives us huge hope. We hope to produce a lot more on the same amount of land because we do not want to get into the
rainforest anymore; we have cleared enough.”

However, the environmental group WWF-UK said that the oil palm was already a very productive crop and that the global demand was growing rapidly, making it unavoidable to expand the land for planting. Adam Harrison, the organization’s food and agriculture policy officer, said, “In a way it does not matter if a ‘good’ variety replaces forest or a ‘bad’ one. The wildlife and communities that need access to that land will suffer. There is plenty of low-carbon, low-wildlife and conflict-free land available in Indonesia and Malaysia, where most palm oil is grown, and there is no more need to dig up forest areas.”

50. The underlined “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to _.

A. the gene B. the shell C. the Tenera D. the oil

51. In what way may the finding of the gene assist the palm growers?

A. Clearing rainforest to make way for palm plantation.

B. Turning the less oily palms into the more oily ones.

C. Predicting what sort of fruit the trees produce.

52. Over which issue Adam Harrison showed his concern in the last paragraph?

A. The demand for palm oil was growing too rapidly.

B. There is not enough land for the planting of oil palms.

C. The more oily palm is not a good replacement of the forest.

D. The planting of oil palms will affect the native environment.

53. Which of the following statements is true to the oil palms?

A. Oil palms planting has been decreased in recent years.

B. The more oily palms can change to the less oily ones.

C. The three types of oil palms are used for commercial purposes.

“Got your cellphone? Glasses? Wallet? ID?” I asked.

“Yes,” my husband Avraham smiled. “Can we please get going? You’ve got to get to your interview before I go to see my patient at one o’clock.”

“Right. Got your medical bag?”

“Check.”

Even years after moving from North America, we still loved the half-hour drive to Jerusalem. The blue sky above the Rocky Mountains, the trees, and the journey up to the Holy City always filled us with gratitude for living in Israel.

As we sped along, Avraham commented, “Every day is an adventure here. Before coming to Israel, I knew that, but here I experience it every day.”

We approached our favorite part of the journey, where a wonderflxl view of Jerusalem suddenly appears above the roadway. We had made good time and arrived at my meeting with time to spare.

After my interview, I met Avraham at our favorite Angers Bakery Cafe. Avraham ordered his daily iced coffee and a bag of fresh bread. Glancing at the clock, I suggested we get going to see his patient.

Avraham had received a request to make a house call at the home of an elderly woman in Jerusalem. Her daughter had called the day before to arrange the appointment. As there are very few foot specialists in Israel, Avraham would travel all over the country to see patients requiring specialized foot care. He searched his pockets for a note on which he had written the address. But the note was nowhere to be found.

“I don’t believe it! I must have left the address at home.”

I sighed and realized our morning check had been incomplete.

“Do you remember any part of the address?” I asked.

“I remember that there was a 17 in it, because it was part of my birth date.”

“Do you know the street name?”

“No. Just that it’s in this neighborhood.”

I had heard the family name mentioned briefly the day before and remembered that it sounded European. “Let’s try looking at building number 17 on this street and see if the mailboxes list any familiar sounding names,” I offered.

We scanned the listings at number 17 and two more nearby buildings without success.

“This is like looking for a needle in a haystack,” I complained.

“Well, since we are already in the city, let’s try one last building,” Avraham suggested, as he whispered a prayer for God’s help in finding the right house.

We tiredly approached the entrance to an apartment house down another street and noticed all of the European names. Taking this as a good sign, we entered the entrance where we met a young boy who informed us that indeed an elderly couple lived next door to their married daughter in the building.

We quickly went upstairs and knocked on a door covered with children's art. I recognized the woman as a teacher from an educational workshop where I had taught.

“What a small world,"I commented. “We know one another from teaching, and now my husband is here to see your mother. Where does she live?”

“My parents live right next door,” she replied, pointing the way down the hallway.

We went to the neighboring apartment where an elderly gentleman answered the door. Avraham announced that he was the foot specialist whom their daughter had called. The delighted man warmly welcomed us. The couple had recently arrived from South Africa and were so pleased to find an English-speaking doctor who made house calls. The wife suffered from a variety of illnesses which made it difficult for her to travel to a clinic. Avraham took a detailed medical history and conducted a thorough examination. After treating her and suggesting appropriate follow-up care, he packed his bag and we left.

Moments later, as we fastened our seat belts, we laughed about actually finding the house in spite of the incredible difficulty. As we were about to pull out of the parking lot, the daughter came rushing up to our
car. She could hardly contain herself. “Thank you for coming to help my mother.” Then she added, “But I have to ask. How did you know to come to see her? After you left, my father came over to thank me for calling you. I told him that I hadn’t called. I thought he had called.”

Avraham and I stared at each other. It was the wrong house!

Or was it?

A. Wise Business

B. As an Evaluation Tool

C. Analyze Market Potential

D. Identifying Problem Areas

E. Importance of Market Research

F. Communication with Consumers

If you are not convinced about something, the chances of you doing it are pretty rare. The same applies to market research. Unless you understand why it is important, it’s unlikely that you will take it seriously.

61.

A well-undertaken research allows the company to determine whether it has been able to satisfy its customers or not. It provides key information about the various factors which affect the business. It helps the company to make plans, take necessary measures, and evaluate its performance. As we go ahead with this write-up, we will get into the details of each factor that makes market research a significant exercise.

62. _

First and the foremost, it will help you understand your existing customers and keep you informed of their needs. For example, a research undertaken a year after the product was marketed will make things a lot more clear by helping you determine where you stand, identify the loopholes (漏洞)in marketing, and figure out plans to avoid loss or increase profits. In addition, it will also help you evaluate the opportunity of expansion. It will tell you exactly what you need to do to increase your customer base.

63. _

Market research is not just for those who are already in business. If you intend to start afresh, it is as important for you as it is for those who are already set. To start with, it will help you identify opportunities available in the market and make the most of them. You will be able to identify potential consumers by dividing the market into various parts — on the basis of age, sex, geographic area, etc. — and try to satisfy their particular needs, thus making the most of the available resources.

64. _

Knowing what problems you are likely to face is always a blessing rather than a headache, because it helps you to be prepared for what is coming your way. If you are planning a product launch, market research will help you identify the risks involved and potential problems — the ones that you might face in the future. On the other hand, if you already have a product in the market, research will help you identify existing problems. Once the problem is identified, you will be able to come up with an effective solution for the same.

65. _

Another important aspect of market research is that it can help you set a standard and evaluate what you have achieved over the course of time. You can use it effectively to undertake comparative studies to track your progress and plan things appropriately. Furthermore, a good businessman keep track of his competitor’s progress as much as he does his own. In this context, market research will help you to keep an eye on your competitor, and develop plans that will help you stay a step ahead of the competition.

The economy is becoming more and more competitive. Planning is only possible when you have accurate information about the market and, more importantly, the consumers. This is where market research comes into the picture. It helps you understand consumer behavior and take steps necessary to keep them happy. That explains why it has lately become one of the most important factor of a successful business.
