If life is a beach, then a village in Ireland has come back from the dead after the sand returned 33 years later due to a freak tide.

Dooagh beach on Achill Island in the west of Ireland, was washed away in 1984 after storms hit the area, leaving a rocky foreshore. The tourists left, causing the hotels and guesthouses as well as the cafes to close down. But in April this year, the sand returned over a ten-day period caused by an unusually high tide that deposited hundreds of thousands of tons of sand along the 300m beach, bringing the beautiful beach back to its former glory.

Emmet Callaghan from Achill Island Tourist Office told the journalist that the people of the island were excited at the beach’s reappearing. “It’s so nice for the villagers to have their beach back. It is an incredible example of the force and power of nature and how the coast can change in a matter of days. Yesterday we had traffic block here in the village with cars and people coming from all over Ireland and the UK to see our new beach,” he said. “The people here have always spoken about their days on the beach and how they enjoyed it as children. To have it back with their kids is unbelievable. Now locals are hoping that the beach is given the blue flag status. We already have five blue flag beaches and hopefully, if we keep our beach here, we’ll have a sixth.”

Dr Ivan Haigh from the University of Southampton said there were two explanations as to why the beach has reformed. “It could be a change in sediment (沉積物) supply, from further up or down the coast which has brought a fresh amount of sediment to the beach,” he said. “It could also be due to a change in environmental conditions, either a change in the wave climate or a series of tides that have provided the ideal conditions for this beach to reform.”

The tourism office and locals hope the new beach will stay, at least for the summer of this year.

58. What can we infer from the article?

A. Dooagh beach was washed away by storms in 1980s.

B. People worldwide showed great interest in the beach.

C. Blue flag beaches are beneficial to children in the village.

D. The locals had wonderful memories about Dooagh beach.

59. The people on Achill Island hope the new Dooagh beach will stay because ______.

A. its reforming shows the force and power of nature

B. they will have more beaches to enjoy with families

C. they hope it can help promote the village’s economy

D. it will make the summer of the village amazing

60. What might be the reason for the beach’s reforming?

A. The wave climate keeps changing.

B. A series of tides provide the proper conditions.

C. Environmental conditions are getting better.

D. A fresh amount of sediment exists in the sea.C

You eat food and drink water, right? Skipping Rocks Lab is changing how you and your future generations will have water. Have you ever thought you could eat water? Think again, this is actually happening somewhere in the world.

The group at Skipping Rocks Lab has made a water bottle you can eat. The product is called Ooho. Unlike plastic bottles, Oohos are neither tall nor hard. They look more like bubbles, or small, round, clear balls. They can hold liquid inside. People who drink Oohos can be surprised: the outside bursts in the mouth.

Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez is with Skipping Rocks Lab. He explains that the outside, or the membrane, of Ooho is made of seaweed, a plant that grows in the ocean. “It’s a membrane made of seaweed that can contain water or any kind of liquid. It’s made from an extract (汁) of the brown seaweed.”

The Ooho membrane is tasteless, and you can eat it. The company says even if you throw away the membrane, it will break down in about four weeks. Gonzalez says the membrane is strong, and good for the environment.

Every year, billions of plastic water bottles are thrown away, polluting land and waterways around the world. The typical water bottle made of plastic can take hundreds of years to degrade.

Lise Honsinger is also with Skipping Rocks Lab. “Most people just grab a bottle of water, hold it for five minutes, drink it, and throw it away. How can that then exist for 700 years? So, yeah, this is absolutely a solution to that. We are very purist: we don’t want to see this packaged in plastic.”

There are limits to the Ooho. It cannot be refilled. Each bottle is small. And Oohos do not store for more than a few days. The Skipping Rocks Lab is working on those issues. “We’re still working on things like extending the shelf life, looking at different options in terms of thickness, if we want to make one that stands up more, or more flexible for marathons where people just want to eat it whole.”

Right now, Skipping Rocks Lab can make only a few thousand Oohos a day. But it is developing new technology that could increase that number to hundreds of thousands.

I’m Caty Weaver. Kevin Enochs wrote this story. Anne Ball adapted it for Learning English. Kelly Jean Kelly was the editor.

61. The advantage of Oohos is that ______.

A. Oohos can be stored over a long period B. Oohos can degrade easily and quickly

C. Oohos may bring convenience to people D. Oohos can help the world save water

62. What can we know about the Ooho membrane?

A. It can hold anything inside. B. The shelf life of it is not long.

C. Its production is very low now. D. It is environmentally friendly.

63. Where does this passage come from?

A. A news report. B. A speech draft. C. A radio speech. D. A website.

64. What might be the best title?

A. Eating water — a long way to go B. Ooho — a useful product

C. New water bottles help fight pollution D. Ooho bursts in your mouthD

March 8 marks the annual International Women’s Day. Around the world, women usually played a not well-known role in history. They were often buried with their unknown talents and amazing tales. Yet there are still some lucky ones whose stories have been recorded. Here are six talented ancient Chinese women who once impressed in their time, and still affect us in our time.

Praised as the “No.1 talented woman”, Li Qingzhao, a poet from the Song Dynasty, was born in Shandong province. She excelled at poetry and in ink painting and calligraphy (書法). Li was most well-known for her poems, which were divided into two contrasting styles reflecting her life as a married woman and a widow. Before her husband’s death, her poems were mainly about a carefree and happy life. The keynote turned into a sad tune after her husband passed away. However, Li was not a narrow-minded woman. Apart from expressing feminine (女性的) feelings and experiences, she also wrote poems praising war heroes and criticizing the corrupted emperor. As an example of female patriot, Li has a great effect on modern women’s literature.

Cai Wenji was good not only at poetry and calligraphy, but also mathematics, astronomy, debate and music. Her masterpieces were Hu Jia Shi Ba Pai. As the daughter of literatus Cai Yi of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cai had a very unusual life. After her first husband died, she was forced to marry Xiongnu tribe’s king. Living in a totally different environment, Cai was very homesick. Twelve years later, Cao Cao, a student of Cai Yi, rescued Cai from the Xiongnu tribe. At the age of 35, Cai got married for a third time in a union arranged by Cao to a man named Dong Si.

Ban Zhao was the first female historian in China. She was also good at writing poems, yet only seven of her works have survived. Ban was often invited by the emperor to teach the queen mathematics, astronomy and poetry. She was honored as Da Gu, a title for knowledgeable and noble women. At the age of 40, Ban finished Han Shu, based on her brother’s writings. A total of four people wrote the book, and Ban, as the last writer, faithfully kept the style of the first three. Ban Zhao also wrote Nv Jie, a book to teach women how to deal with relationships with their husbands and husbands’ relatives and how to properly behave.

Shangguan Wan’er was famous for being given an important position by the only female emperor, Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty. Despite Shangguan’s grandfather being killed for offending Wu, she was highly praised by the female emperor for her literary talent. She served as a key secretary to Wu and was called “a female prime minister” at the time. Shangguan changed court poetry so that it used more meaningful expressions than empty praise, and further developed her style based on her grandfather’s poems.

Su Hui was known for a handkerchief she made. It was embroidered (刺繡) with 841 characters that could form 7,958 poems. Named Xuan Ji Tu, the handkerchief was originally made by Su to send to her husband, Dou Tao. Su waited for her husband to come back after Dou’s exile (流放), yet Dou had an affair with another woman. Sad and angry, Su created the poems on a handkerchief in red, yellow, blue, white, black and purple silk thread and sent it to her husband. Dou was deeply moved by the poems, felt guilty for his behavior and reunited with Su.

When Xue Tao’s name was mentioned, people would think of the famous Xue Tao Jian, a sort of small-size colorful writing paper. It is recorded that Xue Tao created this colored paper to write poems. During her time, writing paper was yellow, yet Xue changed the simple color into different shades of red or green. Later, people made similar colorful paper and named them “Xue Tao Jian”. Xue had talent for poetry and music. Her poems were not limited to those private feminine feelings and emotions; she also expressed her empathy (共鳴) to soldiers on the frontier.

65. These six talented ancient Chinese women were chosen by the author because ______.

A. they were buried with amazing tales B. only their stories have been recorded

C. they played an important role in history D. they still have great influences on us

66. What does the underlined words “excelled at” mean?

67. According to the second paragraph, we can infer that ______.

A. Li Qingzhao has effects on modern women’s literature greatly

B. Li Qingzhao thought she was No.1 talented woman

C. Li Qingzhao’s poems were influenced by her husband’s death

D. Most of Li Qingzhao’s poems were about war heroes and the emperor

68. What did Ban Zhao and Shangguan Wan’er have in common?

Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed by a wide range of students, from the youngest kindergartners to those secondary students. It is really a fun activity, providing students a gentle workout outside in winter. While having fun, students can gain physical and mental benefits.

The physical benefits of cross-country skiing are well-known. If we look at Olympic cross-country skiers, we can see the positive effects on the body that result from training for cross-country skiing.

The average best female cross-country skiers carry 11 percent body fat, and best male skiers carry 5 percent. These percentages are well below the average people who are considered to be athletic—17 percent for females and 10 percent for males. Burning a high number of calories while skiing helps to keep skiers slim in a healthy and attractive way.

Cross-country skiing is also an efficient way to exercise a large number of muscles at once. The upper body gets much more of workout because skiers use ski poles as a means of propulsion (推進), the force that drives skiers forward. Of course, the leg muscles also do their fair share. People who use cross-country skiing as a workout over several weeks will discover that the muscles of their whole body increase in strength.

Cross-country skiing on a regular basis has a tremendous effect on a person’s cardiovascular (心血管的) system. In addition to gaining strength in the muscles of the upper and lower body, people who use cross-country skiing as a workout method over several weeks will also discover that their heart is stronger. A strong heart pumps more efficiently, sending out more blood to the muscles with each contraction (收縮). Through weeks of skiing, people often discover that their resting heart rate has decreased. Highly trained Olympic cross-country skiers have resting heart rates between 28 and 40 beats per minute. Compare that to the resting heart rate of the average person, which is 60 to 80 beats per minute!

The benefits of cross-country skiing extend beyond overall general health. A lot of evidence exists showing that regular physical activities increase the release of mood-lifting endorphins (內啡肽) in the body. After fun skiing lessons, students will be full of energy; they will be relaxed and in a better mood than when they started class. Students will leave class with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that they have developed new skills in a fun activity.

Cross-country skiing is a great way to exercise the whole body. Now more and more students are taking part in this exercise outside during the winter months. They are enjoying it and benefiting from it!

With the program Readers becoming popular recently, two handwritten letters read in it drew the audience’s attention. Many people suggest that we should communicate by writing letters, which has caused a heated discussion among students in our school. Students’ opinions vary.

70% of the students are in favor of it. On one hand, handwritten letters can help students express their feelings better while communicating with others. On the other hand, by writing letters, students can practise their handwriting well, which is very beneficial to their future development.

However, 30% of the students are against it. For one thing, it’s a waste of time and paper for students to write letters. For another, they hold the view that handwritten letters are out of date, which should be given up.

On my personal note, it is a good tradition that we need to hold on to. What’s more, letters are easy to store, which will become great treasures for us to value when we memorize our past in the future. (151 words)
