Theresa May faces a showdown with newly elected Conservative MPs today as the British prime minister tries to shore up her position following claims by former chancellor George Osborne that she is “a dead woman walking”.

One Tory MP said Mrs May would have to give “the performance of her life” if she was to reassure a traumatised party that she can carry on leading the country and deliver Brexit, in spite of throwing away her majority after a disastrous election campaign.

But yesterday there were signs that the Conservative civil war on Europe was about to resume while Mrs May was still trying to negotiate a deal with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist party to give her a majority in the House of Commons.

“She is a dead woman walking and the only question is how long she remains on death row,” said Mr Osborne, sacked by Mrs May last year and now the editor of the Evening Standard newspaper.

In a sign of Mrs May’s weakness, she abandoned plans for a sweeping cabinet reshuffle, including the expected sacking of her chancellor Philip Hammond. Instead, most of her senior team stayed in place. She completed the formation of her new government yesterday, elevating her long-time ally Damian Green — a staunch pro-European — to the post of first secretary of state, in effect her deputy. He will play a key role in setting Brexit policy.

Mr Green’s promotion will further embolden liberal Conservative MPs who believe the prime minister has lost the authority to deliver a “hard Brexit” and will have to bow to pressure for a more business-friendly EU exit.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, who led the Tories to gain 12 seats north of the border, has urged Mrs May to work with other parties to deliver an “open Brexit”.

Mr Hammond and Greg Clark, business secretary, are working with the City and corporate leaders to promote an agenda that puts jobs and investment at the top of the government’s Brexit priorities rather than cutting immigration.

Sir Michael Fallon, defence secretary, told the BBC: “It is very, very important that we’re careful about the existing trade we do with Europe, about access to the single market, in whatever new arrangement we come to.”

But Conservative Eurosceptics are throwing their support behind Mrs May, whom they believe is best placed to deliver on the party’s manifesto promise to take Britain out of the single market.

Boris Johnson, foreign secretary, insisted that reports that he wanted to oust Mrs May were “tripe”, while Bernard Jenkin, another pro-Brexit MP, told Mr Osborne to “shut up”.

Despite widespread anger among the 317 Tory MPs elected on Thursday towards Mrs May, most believe that keeping a weakened premier in Downing Street is better than the alternative.
