企業家“entrepreneur”一詞是從法語中借來的，其原意是指“冒險事業的經營者或組織者”。企業家是從事組織、管理並承擔經營風險的人。企業家要有企業精神（entrepreneurship）和事業心（entrepreneur spirit）。
美籍奧地利政治經濟學家約瑟夫·熊彼特(Joseph AloisSchumpeter )曾提出這樣一個觀點：企業家是從事“創造性破壞（creative destruction）”的創新者。創新（innovation）是企業家精神（entrepreneurship）的內核。
