Subscribe = sub-（下）+ -scrib-（寫，詞源同scribe，script）+ -e（動詞詞尾），即在合同下簽字，引申爲“簽署、認購、贊成”。
Subscribe作不及物動詞時，常見用法有subscribe to sth定期訂閱/捐款、同意贊成，subscribe for sth申購（股份）、預訂，比如subscribe to this newspaper（訂閱這份報紙）、subscribed to the view贊同該觀點、subscribe for shares/bonds認購股票/公債。
