1. 用作形容詞和副詞 late 的比較級。如：

It’s rather later than I thought. 這比我想的還要晚。

He left home later than usual. 他比平常還晚離家。

2. 用於一段具體時間之後，表示從過去或將來算起的多長時間以後，但通常不指從現在算起的多久以後。如：

誤：I’ll call again a week later.(可改爲…in a week)

正：I called again a week later. 一週後我又打了電話。

正：I’ll call her on March 5 and will call again a week later. 我將在3月5日給她打個電話，過一週後我將再打個電話。

但是later單獨使用(即不連用具體時間)，可以表示從現在算起的“以後”(具有泛指意義)。如：

Let’s stop now and finish it later. 現在停下來，以後再完成它。

He may be busy, in which case I’ll call later. 他可能忙，如若如此，我以後再來拜訪。

3. 用於 later on，表示“以後”“後來”，可用於過去或將來。如：

We’ll discuss the matter later on. 我們以後將討論這件事。

Later on he realized his mistake. 後來他認識到了自己的錯誤。

4. sooner or later 爲習語，意爲“遲早”，注意其詞序不能倒過來。如：

You’ll know the truth sooner or later. 你遲早會知道真相的。

Sooner or later you’ll have to make a decision. 你早晚得拿個主意。
