Diggings on the storied Judean cliffside revealed a new Dead Sea Scrolls(死海經卷) cave, full of scroll storage jars and other antiques, the first such discovery in over 60 years. The discovery overturns a decades-old theory in the archaeological community that Dead Sea Scrolls were only found in certain caves at the Qumran cliffs, which are managed by Israel in the West Bank. Until now, it was accepted that Dead Sea Scrolls were found only in 11 caves at Qumran, but the teams believed there was no doubt this was the 12th cave.

Pottery fragments, broken scroll storage jars and their lids—even neolithic flint(新石器時代燧石) tools and arrowheads—littered the cave's entrance and farther in, there appeared to be a cavein(塌陷). After a bit of work of digging, the team made a monumental find: an unbroken storage jar with a scroll. It was rushed to Hebrew University's conservation lab, where it was unfolded in a protected environment. It had no writing; it was placed in the jar to prepare it for writing.

But the effort was not in vain. Scientists soon discovered the cavein was intentional and it hid a tunnel about 1620 feet in length. At some point hidden in the tunnel, the team found a few broken storage jars with the lid. They also found the cloth coverings and the leather strap that bound the scrolls the jars once held. The team thought robbers came into the tunnel, took the scrolls, or even opened the scrolls and left everything around, the textiles, the pottery.

Over the last few years, researchers have believed Dead Sea Scroll fragments made their way onto the antique black market, leading authorities and researchers to start the task of surveying all the caves at Qumran in the Judean desert.

This was likely just the first in a series of Dead Sea Scroll discoveries and therefore the team have hundreds of caves and many years to go, making a big project, a huge operation but they are very upbeat because after 60 years people still find new caves with materials that cast new light on the scrolls.

According to a news release from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the diggings are part of “Operation Scroll” a joint effort by the university, the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Civil Administration of Judea and Samaria.

( )58. From the passage, this new Dead Sea Scrolls cave is so significant because ________.

A. it can possibly be the evidence of the first discovery in over 60 years

B. its discovery turns upside down a decadesold archaeological theory

C. it was the twelfth Dead Sea Scrolls cave found at the Qumran cliffs

D. it is extremely monumental to find the unbroken storage jar

( )59. The underlined word in paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. impressive B. optimistic C. crucial D. effective

( )60. The passage mainly talks about ________.

A. the efforts to discover an intentional cave-in

B. the reappearance of Dead Sea Scroll fragments

C. an operation on materials casting light on scrolls

D. the digging of a potential Dead Sea Scrolls caveC

Amazon is breaking into physical retail in a new way. The online retail giant revealed a new kind of physical store concept in a video published on Monday.

The store, called Amazon Go, doesn't work like a typical Walmart or supermarket. Instead, it's designed so that shoppers will use an app, also called Amazon Go, to automatically add the products that they plan to buy to a digital shopping cart by scanning a QR code(二維碼). They can then walk out of the building without waiting in a checkout line because Amazon will charge their Amazon account and send them a receipt.

The first Amazon Go store is located in Seattle, where Amazon is headquartered. For years, there have been rumors the e-commerce company would expand its dominance from digital to physical shopping. Amazon began experimenting with physical bookstores a year ago, but Amazon Go may mark its boldest bet on physical ones yet. By removing much of the staff needed to operate a store, Amazon keeps costs lower than traditional competitors. It's also in a strong position to bring together data on its customers' shopping habits online and offline to make better suggestions in all situations.

However, Amazon's move deeper into physical retail shops comes in a sensitive political climate. The company could be perceived as being a threat to some of the 3.4 million Americans who work as cashiers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the campaign trail, Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Amazon and its founder Jeff Bezos for “getting away with murder tax-wise” and having “a huge antitrust(反壟斷) problem.” Will the Presidentelect add “job killer” to the list of criticisms?

Amazon's effort to launch a new kind of retail store predates(在……之前) the rise of Donald Trump. “Four years ago we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no lines and no checkout? Could we push the boundaries of computer vision and machine learning to create a store where customers could simply take what they want and go?” The company says on an informational page about Amazon Go. For now, Amazon is starting slow. The Amazon Go is only open to Amazon employees in our Beta program, and is scheduled to open to the public in early 2017.

( )61. In Amazon Go, people can ________ .

A. buy products by paying cash B. buy carts without scanning a QR code

C. have no bother to check out and queue D. use an app to wait in a checkout line

( )62. What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A. Amazon has dominated the physical bookstores.

B. Amazon can contribute to reducing the cost of staff.

C. Amazon manages to take the place of physical shopping.

D. Amazon can ignore each customer's advice in all situations.

( )63. The reason why Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Amazon Go is that Amazon Go ________ .

A. would result in a political crisis B. would threaten the career of cashiers

C. may result in a huge antitrust D. is No.1 job killer in the list of criticisms

( )64. The main purpose of writing the passage is ________ .

A. to introduce the Amazon Go store B. to explain how Amazon Go works

C. to arouse people's interest in Amazon D. to indicate Trump's attitude to AmazonD

So bitter a dark winter day in 1942 was no different from any other day in this concentration camp. I was almost dead, surviving from day to day, since I was brought here with thousands of other Jews. Each day, as more disappeared, the hungry past seemed like a mere dream, and I sank deeper and deeper into despair.

Suddenly, I noticed a young girl, on the other side of the barbed wire, stopped and looked at me with sad eyes seeming to say that she understood. Then she reached into her pocket, and pulled out a red apple. She looked cautiously to the left and the right and then with smile of triumph quickly threw the apple over the fence. I ran to pick it up, holding it in my trembling frozen fingers. Her eyes twinkled. In my world of death this apple was an expression of life, of love.

She came at the same time to the spot the next day. And again she brought me an apple flying it over the fence with that same sweet smile. For seven months we met like this. Sometimes we exchanged a few words, sometimes just an apple. But one day I could barely speak as I said what must be said: “Don' t bring me an apple tomorrow. I am being sent to another camp.” Turning before I lost all my control, I run away and I couldn't stand looking back.

With months passing and nightmares continuing, the memory of this girl sustained me through the hopelessness. Over and over in my mind, I saw her face, her kind eyes, I heard her gentle words, I tasted those apples. And then the war ended and I was freed. I lost everything that was precious to me including my family.

But I still had the memory of this girl, a memory I carried in my heart and gave me the will to go on as I moved to America to start a new life. In the New York City a friend convinced me to go_on_a_blind_date with a girl named Roma. Reluctantly, I agreed.

“Where were you during the war?” Roma asked me gently.

“I was in a concentration camp in Germany,” I replied.

Roma got a faraway look in her eyes, as if she was remembering something bitter-sweet.

“What is it?” I asked.

Roma explained in a soft voice. “You see, when I was a young girl I lived near a concentration camp, where I used to visit a boy prisoner every day bringing him apples. I would throw the apple over the fence and he would be so happy.”

Roma sighed heavily and continued, “It is hard to describe how we felt about each other—after all we were young and we only exchanged a few words—but I can tell there was much love there. But I cannot bear thinking that he was killed, and I try to remember him as he was for those months we were given together.”

With my heart pounding so loudly, I looked directly at Roma and asked, “And did he tell you not to bring an apple tomorrow because he was sent to another camp?”

“How on earth could you possibly know that?”

I took her hands in mine and answered, “Because I was that boy, Roma.”

For many moments, there was only silence. We could not take our eyes from each other, behind which, as the veils of time lifted, we recognized the soul. Finally, I said, “Roma, I don' t ever want to be separated from you again. Now I am free, and I want to be together with you forever. Dear, will you marry me?” I saw the same twinkle in her eyes that I used to see as Roma said yes.

On Valentine's Day, 1996, I brought Roma to the Oprah Winfrey Show because I wanted to tell her on this national program what I felt in my heart every day: “Darling, you fed me in the concentration camp when I was hungry. And I am still hungry, for something I will never get enough of: your love.”

How to be wiser?

Wisdom is something that's hard to define and yet somehow we know it when we see it. The wise people can be thoughtful and selfreflective. They can recognize the limits of their own knowledge, consider alternative perspectives, and remember that the world is always changing. The wise people tolerate uncertainty and remain optimistic that even tricky problems do have solutions. They can judge what is true or right.

Wisdom isn't an innate quality—we can be wise and unwise in different situations. Igor Grossman of the University of Waterloo in Canada found that some people appeared to be wise in one situation, but not in another. So why are there differences in different situations? People were wiser when they were with their friends. It made them more likely to have the bigger picture, to think of other perspectives and to recognize the limits of their own knowledge. When people were alone they seemed to get so involved in a situation that they didn't even think about alternatives. This means wisdom might be more common than we think.

Some people still displayed more wisdom than others and some were more foolish, but not across every situation. This provides hope. If we can be wise sometimes, maybe we can learn to be wise more often. The question is how to do it. For Cornell University psychologist Robert Sternberg, wisdom is all about balance. Following Sternberg's model, what you need to do is to remember to work out what all the different interests are in a given dilemma, both in the short and long term and to pay attention to the changing environment and how it might be shaped. Talking about yourself with another person can help. In a kind of school of wisdom, Grossman has experimented with different strategies in the lab. People were taught to take a different perspective by imagining they were taking a bird'seyeview of the situation. The idea is to try to distance yourself from the immediate experience. So when I have a dilemma, I should be asking what others would do?

So can you set out to be wise? Yes, but there are lots of factors to remember. You need to take into account that people will have different goals, priorities and responses to your own. If you can juggle all that, you probably are showing wisdom. But the complexity shouldn't stop us from trying. As Grossman told me, “It's not that you suddenly become the next Buddha, but you do become a little bit wiser.”

One possible version:

Ben John's grandma is found to ask Google Search in an extremely polite way, whose behavior is beyond the expectation of her grandson but fully appreciated by Google and many netizens. (31)

It goes without saying that social manners are of great significance in the virtual world. On the one hand, removing barriers in communication, the observation of digital etiquette helps create a harmonious and civilized network environment. On the other hand, how a person behaves when nobody knows who he is online, to a large extent, can reflect his genuine personality.
